Requests for new variablesedit source

If you use this template and discover that there is no variable for a credit you find the end credits, please add the variable on the episode page yourself, then come back here and tell me what name you've used. Imagine there's an episode called The Test of Pharg, and on that episode there's a credit for "Pharg monster design by John Smith". Enter the variable

|PhargMonster=John Smith

to the list of variables on the article page, then write here:

*PhargMonster (The Test of Pharg) ~~~~

Then I'll add it to the template and to the usage text in the documentation, and the credit will magically appear on The Test of Pharg — but nowhere else. Thanks :) CzechOut | 16:03, April 6, 2010 (UTC)

Sorry to take so long to respond. I've rechecked my broadcast copy of the episode and Barney Curnow isn't there. There is no credit of VFX Supervisor. There's an On-set VFX Supervisor and a Visual FX Supervisor, but there's no VFX Supervisor. So I won't be adding that in. (Can't see that it's difference from a Visual FX Supervisor, anyway.) Barney Curnow is one of these credits-unlucky guys who's been working on DW forever, but rarely makes it to the broadcast credits. CzechOut | 02:40, December 27, 2010 (UTC)

*CastingDirector2 (The Eternity Trap, and presumably other SJA series 3 episodes) 94.2.154.27 15:41, June 27, 2011 (UTC)

Done.
czechout<staff />   13:20:22 Fri 22 Jul 2011
AssistantLocationManager is already present (though I need to update the cut-and-paste bit at the bottom to include it). But what do you mean "designer"? Don't have Bane to hand. There's really a credit of just "Designer"?
czechout<staff />   13:20:22 Fri 22 Jul 2011
That's what I saw on the credits. -- Tybort (talk page) 07:49, July 29, 2011 (UTC)
Yep, checked again. Above Production Designer and below Editor. No run-on line or anything. -- Tybort (talk page) 20:25, July 30, 2011 (UTC)
Also, relating to this episode, would creating a StoreMan and EditorsAssistant be a bit much, or should the credits just remain on StorePerson and AsstEditor? -- Tybort (talk page) 20:20, July 30, 2011 (UTC)
An Editor's Asst is not the same thing as an Asst Editor. You're saying you see Editor's Assistant on Invasion of the Bane?
As for a StorePerson, I'd leave it for use when StoreMan is seen. Then on those eps with StoreMan, I'd use one of the Note variables to say that Store Person was actually credited as "Store Man" on this episode.

Also, the CreatedBy credit applies to The Sarah Jane Adventures too, so would it be fine if it was placed on the non-Miracle Day sheet, too? -- Tybort (talk page) 07:49, July 29, 2011 (UTC)

Not strictly a need for it; I've already retrofitted CreatedBy on all pre-MD eps of Torchwood. And SJA only has three new stories to go. I'd rather not put it in the form on the template page. It might confuse people with the other "character created by" credits. Or, worse, someone might be tempted to fill it out on a DW page with some nonsense about Sidney Newman and Verity Lambert. So if you're still filling in SJA credits from already-aired eps, you can either manually add it yourself, or you can let me add it all later with a simple bot run.
czechout<staff />   14:20:18 Tue 02 Aug 2011
Yes, there's an Editor's Assistant credit. Sorry, I'm not an expert on these things; wasn't sure if it was different or not. Anyway, I can only fill in episodes that have recently been put on iPlayer. I've only done series 3 and 4, plus the beginning of series 1. The Temptation of Sarah Jane Smith and Enemy of the Bane don't even have an unfinished list. -- Tybort (talk page) 19:46, August 4, 2011 (UTC)
Editor's Assistant done. Var name: EditorsAssistant, as you suggested.

  • Lead3DArtist, LeadAnimator, LeadDigitalMattePainter, 2DSupervisor, Compositor up to Compositor10 or Compositor11, (depending on whether you want to count the typo crediting the same person twice)
Yes, errors in the credit roll should be reflected, then annotated in a Note variable.
czechout<staff />   12:28:18 Thu 01 Sep 2011
Having said that, I see no such error in the premiere broadcast version. There are 12 unique compositors in the roll. I'm not seeing any duplicates. Whom did you have in mind as the lucky winner of two credits?

and ExecutiveVisualFXProducer. (TV: The Pandorica Opens) -- Tybort (talk page) 20:20, July 30, 2011 (UTC)

Hey just to be clear on these requests from 22 and 30 July — you are talking about credits that existed on the episode as broadcast, right? Not DVD credits?
czechout<staff />   14:20:18 Tue 02 Aug 2011
It was an airing, yes. Unless repeats used the DVD credits. -- Tybort (talk page) 23:23, August 2, 2011 (UTC)
And yes, this was on the episode of The Big Bang I saw too (apart from LeadAnimator I think). -- Tybort -- Tybort (talk page) 19:48, August 4, 2011 (UTC)
Actually, we will put that in there. It's not our place to judge whether a credit is "correct". If it's there, we need to include it. Character4 and 5 included, along with the dependent vars they bring.
czechout<staff />   17:35:03 Wed 31 Aug 2011
Fair enough, but wouldn't it make more sense to place the bits as "Ood and Judoon" (for instance Character4a and Character4b) rather than "Ood created by" and "Judoon created by" that Character 4 and 5 entail, given that's how it appears in the credits? -- Tybort (talk page) 18:13, August 31, 2011 (UTC)
Sure. I was just making sure the sort of "extra" variable worked. Change it at will.

The form to copy and paste into pages doesn't seem to have been been updated recently, despite all the additions to the template you've done -- Tybort (talk page) 22:38, September 10, 2011 (UTC)

To clarify, when I manually add CameraAsst3 it turns up fine, but the long list under "Standard form" doesn't show it for some reason. -- Tybort (talk page) 14:25, September 25, 2011 (UTC)
This still needs doing as of today, but there's no great pressure to do the form until DW starts back. At which time it'll inevitably need to be changed again. Still, it is on my radar of things to fix.

Oh, and the sound design team in recent Doctor Who episodes doesn't seem to match up with what's on the pre-made template. -- Tybort (talk page) 00:39, September 11, 2011 (UTC)

Could you please explain this a bit more. I hope you're just saying that the order of sound team variables is different now in the Moffat era than it was when RTD was around. We're not actually missing sound team variables are we?
  • UKProductionDesigner is on the list, yet it won't show up. (TV: The New World, The Categories of Life, The Middle Men, The Gathering) -- Tybort (talk page) 00:25, September 13, 2011 (UTC) Done.
    czechout<staff />   16:49: Sat 31 Mar 2012
  • ProductionManager2, ProductionSecretary2, AsstEditor2, VisualEffects2, SeriesProducer (TV: Closing Time) All done, but AsstEditor2 was actually already in place and functioning. The problem on Closing Time (TV story) was that there were two instances of AsstEditor2 on the page, and the bottom-most one was set to null — i.e., AsstEditor2=. The bottom-most instance of a variable is always the one that gets displayed, so it was overriding the other AsstEditor2.
Also I haven't seen any "Sound Editor" credit for some time. -- Tybort (talk page) 14:25, September 25, 2011 (UTC)
Not sure what you mean here. There are a lot of variables that don't get used frequently. That doesn't mean the variable should be removed.

And yes, StoryboardConceptArtist (or Storyboard / Concept Artist) seems to be a merged version of StoryboardArtist and ConceptArtist. This is from the DVD version, as you warned in August. I've just rented Days 1-3, and Day 4 is in a rerun early Sunday morning, so I'll be able to tell any possible divergences in the DVD release by Sunday. -- Tybort (talk page) 19:38, December 9, 2011 (UTC) Yes, it turns out the broadcast credits ARE shorter and briefer. Runner3 and SoundAssistant; ONLY those two are required for Children of Earth though. -- Tybort (talk page) 17:15, December 11, 2011 (UTC)

So far as I can tell, though, Torchwood series 1's broadcast credits are that long, broadcast or video.

Every single variable needs to be wrapped in a generic dab away template, so that whatever the dab term, it can be zapped away. Fun.

I figured out that problem by putting "Milk VFXMilk" for the variable, and it didn't seem to break anything at Special:Browse/Milk-20VFX, so I think that's resolved. P&P talk contribs 03:40, August 26, 2014 (UTC)

Click for a bunch of questions from Starkidsoph that SOTO kindly answered...

I've never used this template before, so I'm sorry if there are any mistakes, or if the following questions are stupid:
  • Ben Pickles is credited with "Title Sequence & Additional VFX" - I put him in for TitleSequence because it's got the nice little place in the box, should another variable be created for AdditionalVFX and/or the combo? I don't know whether he's been credited like that before, or will be in future
  • What's the policy on letters after people's names? For this episode the Casting Director credit reads "Andy Pryor CDG" and the Camera Operator credit "Mark McQuoid ACO", do I list them simply as Andy Pryor and Mark McQuoid?
  • How much do we worry about capitalisation/hyphenation? e.g. template displays Post-production Supervisor but this episode's credits style it Post Production Supervisor, template has On-line Editor but episode credits Online Editor

And some quibbles about the way the template displays on the page:

  • Is there any reason the co-executive producer listing can't be made to detect plurality like some of the other credits? "Co-executive producer(s) Nikki Wilson" is a little ugly imo, in an otherwise beautifully elegant layout
  • The credits listed at the bottom of the first box that the template creates are separated by dots, but the number of spaces before and after the dot is inconsistent (as in the line displays credit 1, two or three spaces, dot, one space, credit 2) - can it be changed to a consistent separator of space-dot-space?
  • Is there a reason that the "General production staff", "Art department" and "Make-up and prosthetics" sections of the second box are laid out with less vertical space between the heading and the list of personnel than the other categories?
  • Finally, in addition to ProstheticsSupervisor the template appears to contain variables for the misspellings ProsthethicsSupervisor and ProstetheticsSupervisor - can these be deleted with no great disruption to the template's usage?

Thanks! Starkidsoph 09:18, 2 November 2021 (UTC)

In answer to some of these questions:
  • "Andy Pryor CDG" is correct (it's part of the credit, per T:CAST AND CREW, and we have a redirect to help with linking);
  • Minor changes in styling for job titles (so long as it's only hyphens and capitalisation) are generally ignored in favour of consistency;
  • The extra vertical spacing is because of the way the table is set up (with unused sections screwing with this slightly). I think it's the Miracle Day credits that did the most "damage" in this regard.
  • Co-executive producer is an easy fix, probably just overlooked because it's not often used;
  • The prosthetics supervisor misspellings are quite strange. Not sure how that happened if I'm honest. Should remove those;
  • Finally, Ben Pickles should be credited twice, since he's above the line as title sequence creator, but "additional VFX" is a relatively junior credit belonging further down in the VFX department. I'm fairly sure there's a variable already.
I'll attend to the new variables soon. It's good to have someone else taking interest in doing this template well. If I missed anything above, I'll have another look when I have the chance to go through the credits (and make the updates you've called for above). The preceding unsigned comment was added by SOTO (talk • contribs) .
Done! up to this point. Sorry for the delay. Bongo50 20:25, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
Thank you so much, it looks great! Just a couple of things:
  • The plural version of the ProstheticsTrainee credit is showing up as "Prosethetics Trainees"
  • "Plaster[s]" should be "Plasterer[s]", and the plural version doesn't seem to be working properly (see The Halloween Apocalypse)
  • I don't know if this was already the case, but the CharCreatedBy thingies past #1 are formatted a bit oddly (at least #2 and #3 are, cf. Survivors of the Flux) – the text itself all seems to be right, but it's showing up as I think a code block?
Starkidsoph 00:30, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, those issues are now fixed. I'll get on the next batch later today. Bongo50 06:06, 4 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi, me again... I went and did Revolution of the Daleks since some of the crew information was in a separate table for some reason, and it needs the following new variables:

  • Stunt13
  • Stunt14
  • ADTrainee
  • CameraAsst4
  • GraphicsTrainee
  • 2ndStandbyProps
  • PropFabrication2
  • PropFabrication3
  • AnimatronicOperator
  • ConstructionTrainee
  • AdditionalVFX3 (this one's for Ben Pickles, who was indeed credited the same way here as mentioned above)

And some things I noticed while wrestling with the template:

  • PropFabrication comes out as Props Fabrication, which it oughtn't
  • Construction Chargehand doesn't change to Construction Chargehands as it should when you put in more than one
  • and Script Supervisors needs correct singular and might also be in the wrong category - it should appear under "Script department", not "Camera and lighting department", surely?

There wouldn't be anything I can do to help by any chance? You may have noticed I'm just a tiny bit nitpicky, and frankly I think this template is a gorgeous piece of work which I'd love to contribute to if I can! Starkidsoph 06:11, 3 November 2021 (UTC)

Done! up to this point. Regarding "Script Supervisors", these are actually a member of the "Camera and lighting department" according to our page on them, Continuity supervisor. Bongo50 19:23, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
Well, the more you know. Thanks! Starkidsoph 00:08, 5 July 2023 (UTC)

December 2021edit source

From the later episodes of Flux:

  • ProductionOfficeRunner
  • ProductionOfficeRunner2
  • CovidTestingScheduler
  • CovidTestingScheduler2
  • CovidOfficeAsst
  • CameraTrainee2
  • ArtDeptAssistant2 (ArtDepartmentAssistant and ArtDeptAssistant both exist; I went with the shorter one since it also displays higher up, and the superfluous one should probably be deleted)
  • AssistantGrip2
  • StandbyProps4
  • ProductionAccountant2
  • AdditionalVFX4
  • AdditionalVFX5
  • AdditionalOrchestrationBy

Do obvious typos go in Notes? E.g. in Survivors of the Flux there's a credit for "Crast Payroll Accountant" - I corrected it when I was entering the crew listing, but I'm not sure whether to mention the error. Starkidsoph 04:54, 9 November 2021 (UTC). Updated 02:09, 9 December 2021 (UTC)

Done! I'm hesitant to remove "ArtDepartmentAssistant" as I don't know what pages might be using it and I don't want to break anything. It's potentially something to revisit. I'd put obvious typos in notes, yes. It feels correct to note them somewhere. Bongo50 17:14, 5 July 2023 (UTC)

Since they both display correctly, Property:Art department assistant appears to work very well for this purpose – I checked all 25 pages on the list and found only one with the longer version, which I changed over. I can keep a list of the pages and check again to make sure nothing's broken, if you want to delete it.
As for the Prosthetics Supervisor variants (ProsthethicsSupervisor and ProstetheticsSupervisor), I think something might currently be broken there: Cyberwoman is the only page in Property:Prosthetics supervisor, because as far as I can make out ProstheticsSupervisor doesn't display at all except in conjunction with ProstheticsSupervisor2, while ProstetheticsSupervisor is coded in as the correct singular but has seemingly never been used, and ProsthethicsSupervisor doesn't work right at all. Basically I don't think you could make it more broken if you tried.
Regarding recent changes, there's some sort of duplication on CameraTrainee – see e.g. Survivors of the Flux – and ProductionAccountant2 (Village of the Angels) isn't pluralising to Production Accountants. Everything else is perfect! (Apologies for being a bit of a reply guy...) Starkidsoph 00:41, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for pointing out all of these issues. I've fixed everything, including the prosthetics supervisor mess. I decided to run through every page using this template with my bot and found no pages using the incorrect parameters so everything should be working now. 15:18, 8 July 2023 (UTC)

Current state of the templateedit source

As of now, I believe we're up to date with this template. Of course, we can expect a new influx of credits in a few months, but that's a while off. What does still need doing is updating the form provided in the template documentation. I will get this up to date before the next episode, but it could be a while. I'd also like to rewrite the template somewhat to used CrewCredit at somepoint in the future, but that will almost certainly be after the next set of episodes, and I need to make CrewCredit more robust before then anyway. Any further issues, please just let me know. Bongo50 17:54, 8 July 2023 (UTC)

RTD2 new variablesedit source

NOTE: All new variables listed from here on were not added to this template, as Wolf crew was created instead to apply from The Star Beast onwards. Starkidsoph 07:38, 10 June 2024 (UTC)

November 2023edit source

So below is the (massive) list of new variables required for The Star Beast, but I'm not quite sure how to organise some of them – principally in the sections for VFX outsourced to multiple different companies. Essentially it's got a layout rather like you get in big effects films, where each page of credits lists a specific company and its artists; this means that, for example, there are two people credited as "CG Supervisor", one from Painting Practice and one from Untold Studios. (Untold Studios also has, by my count, forty-six people credited as VFX artists for this episode, but that's a separate problem.) Is there any precedent for this? Would it be better for the template to display them separately by company as well, and if so what would be the best way to facilitate that during variable entry?

Additionally, some of the newly credited positions have VERY long titles; I've tried to come up with usable shortened forms, but please do change them if you come up with something better. Starkidsoph

From The Star Beast (click to expand):

One more thing: the new title sequence is credited to two companies, is there any way to have them linked separately in the credit? I tried "TitleSequence=Painting Practice & Realtime Visualisation", but it didn't quite work.

Oh wow. This is massive and will take some time to get through. I'm going to have to have a serious think about some of these. I've been wanting to do a rewrite on wales crew for some time and, with these major additions, maybe this would be a good chance? Or perhaps we introduce something like wolf crew and design that to better handle multiple VFX companies? Bongo50 22:43, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for finishing that, I was starting to get a bit bored. SAW is, as far as I can tell, Screen Alliance Wales, an initiative that works with Bad Wolf to get new people into the industry. It'd probably make sense to link to a page for that, and then the job role, which we usually have a page for already. Aquanafrahudy 📢 🖊️ 22:52, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
Ah! Much obliged; suggested variable names duly amended. Starkidsoph 03:41, 27 November 2023 (UTC)

    • DirectorOfProduction (ditto)

A couple of notes:

  • These episodes also continue the use of some of those credits that I listed previously as new from Tales of the TARDIS, so it's definitely on the same model;
  • Speaking of TotT, you can see in those episodes that the "Colourist" credit displays with a colon instead of a dash when pluralised;
  • And least trivially, have we lost the Visual Editor mode with the switch to independent? I seem to only be able to access source editing, which is fine for most things but makes template entry considerably harder – specifically, there isn't a way to check whether or not a particular variable name already exists in the template.

Starkidsoph 08:40, 11 May 2024 (UTC)

Wow, I am very behind on these. I'm assuming the latest episodes still have multiple VFX companies creddited seperately? If so, I think I'm going to need to create a new template for these to make it easier to handle. After all, we're no longer in the BBC Wales era of Doctor Who so it make sense to leave wales crew behind. Bongo50 16:13, 11 May 2024 (UTC)
Actually not in this new season so far, but you've got a point about the new era anyhow. Sorry to be dumping so much on you, I know it creates huge amounts of work!
Today's episode only had a couple new credits, so I've just added those to last week's list above. Starkidsoph 03:30, 18 May 2024 (UTC)
I've created Forum:Wolf crew template to brainstorm the creation of a new template and discuss issues that occur during this process. Bongo50 22:23, 18 May 2024 (UTC)
