History[[edit] | [edit source]]
According to a plaque by its entrance, construction of the Barbara Wright Building was completed in spring 2016, under the headship of Frank Armitage. (TV: The Coach with the Dragon Tattoo, Nightvisiting)
One night in early September, (TV: Co-Owner of a Lonely Heart) the Twelfth Doctor took Charlie and Andrea Quill away from their war-torn home planet of Rhodia, and left them outside the front of the Barbara Wright Building. (TV: For Tonight We Might Die)
From autumn 2016 onwards, Miss Quill taught physics in Room B3, to students including Charlie, April, Ram, Tanya, Matteusz (TV: For Tonight We Might Die) and Lowe. (PROSE: Joyride)
A female Leaf Dragon fell through the hole in space-time into one of the corridors and bonded herself with Tom Dawson, a coach at Coal Hill. The Leaf Dragon's male mate followed but saw that if he hurt Dawson it would hurt the dragon, so he left. Meanwhile, Dawson experienced a rapid growth in strength. He began killing people to keep the dragon alive. (TV: The Coach with the Dragon Tattoo)
On 12 October, student Kevin Williams stayed in the building after dark, where he encountered a Shadow Kin. Quill gave him a displacement gun. Kevin shot the Shadow Kin with it, killing both the monster and himself.
The following evening, Corakinus, leader of the Shadow Kin, came through a space-time crack to the Barbara Wright Building, and encountered Quill, Charlie, and April, who had been preparing for the prom. April skimmed it with the displacement gun, causing the two to share one heart.
Coal Hill's Autumn Prom was held in the building's main hall on the 14 October. During the prom, the Shadow Kin attacked the school en masse. One student, Rachel Chapman, was killed. The Twelfth Doctor arrived and used his sonic screwdriver to amplify the lights of the Barbara Wright Building. The Shadow Kin were pushed back to where they came from and the prom was saved. The Doctor then talked to the five students who had helped him defeat the Shadow Kin: Charlie, April, Ram Singh, Tanya Adeola and Matteusz Andrzejewski. He tasked them with protecting Coal Hill from further alien attacks and tasked Quill with protecting them. (TV: For Tonight We Might Die)
A week later, Ram began found several of Coach Dawson's killings around the building. The mate of Dawson's dragon returned to Coal Hill School intent on getting her back. The dragon killed and skinned the head teacher, Mr Armitage, after breaking through a space-time crack in his office. When Ram realised that Dawson and his dragon tattoo were responsible for the killings, he and his friends confronted Dawson. The other dragon found Dawson at the same time and, with some encouragement from Ram, grabbed Dawson and took him through the hole in space-time, ending the killing spree. Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]
The building is obviously named after Barbara Wright, companion of the First Doctor who was a history teacher at Coal Hill School in the 1960s.
Though not obviously visible in the episode itself, the prop for the Barbara Wright Building plaque also states that the architects were "Pick, Holder & Ragan Associates" of 17 Paternoster Place, London, and the contractor was "G Max Construction Ltd." of Mace House, Mill Lane, Leytonstone.
