History[[edit] | [edit source]]
The original Scientist, along with the other original four Paradigm Daleks (the white Supreme, yellow Eternal, blue Strategist, and red Drone), were created when the three survivors of an encounter with the Doctor tricked the Eleventh Doctor into allowing them to activate the Progenitor device. It worked on the controls when their ship was attacked by enhanced Spitfires with gravity bubbles and laser weapons. It escaped through a time corridor with the others and went on to help rebuild the Daleks. (TV: Victory of the Daleks [+]Loading...["Victory of the Daleks (TV story)","Victory of the Daleks"])
Several Scientist Daleks patrolled Kaalann and studied the Varga plants which infested the capital. One Scientist Dalek externally guarded the Visualiser room. (GAME: City of the Daleks [+]Loading...["City of the Daleks (video game)","City of the Daleks"])
One Scientist Dalek, designated Unit Three, was captured and taken aboard Station 7. Several Scientist Daleks were part of the platoon led by Chief Strategist that attacked Station 7, with several other Strategists and Drones under its leadership. From the command ship, some Scientist Daleks transmitted control signals calling all Robomen and Ogrons detained on the station to kill all humans, while others fed static electricity to the station's floors allowing captured Dalek technology to reactivate so they could salvage their equipment for analysis and repair. A Scientist Dalek sent an alien family plummeting through time and space while attempting to collect all the time orbs. The Scientist recruited many Strategist Daleks and Drones. It also recruited big armies of Cybermen and Silurians as a distraction for the Eleventh Doctor and Amy. (GAME: The Mazes of Time [+]Loading...["The Mazes of Time (video game)","The Mazes of Time"])
Dalek Scientists were present in the Dalek Command Node when the Daleks invaded London in the year 2106 using a piece of the Eternity Clock. They were likely destroyed when the Doctor set the gas pipes built underneath the Command Node to explode. More Scientists were present on the Dalek Emperor's Flagship. The original Dalek Scientist had served as part of the Paradigm's Supreme Council until their repeated failures. During the ensuing reign of the resurrected Dalek Empire, the Scentist, despite the Paradigm's decreased influence, still served the Daleks. It was unable to translate a message coming from Trenzalore, forcing a Dalek Fleet to follow it and investigate. Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]
- Mark Gatiss coined the name.
- Doctor Who Magazine nicknamed the Scientist Dalek the "Baked-bean Dalek".
- As of 2020, the Scientist Dalek is the only one of the five main New Dalek Paradigm ranks to not appear on-screen since their first appearance in Victory of the Daleks. At least one Dalek of every other rank has appeared in at least one TV story after.
- According to the non-narrative source Doctor Who The Official Annual 2011, the Scientist Dalek's role was to examine and formulate new weapons as well as to analyse the genetic and physiological make-up of the Daleks' enemies so that their weaknesses could be isolated.
- "New Paradigm Scientist Dalek" is one of Dalek enemies used in the Doctor Who: Legacy mobile game.
- All five archetypes of the New Dalek Paradigm feature in The Lego Batman Movie, appearing among the inhabitants of the Phantom Zone, alongside many famous villains from a number of fictional franchises. Like the others, they are unleashed upon Gotham City by the supervillain known as "the Joker" at the climax of the film, only to be defeated and sealed back inside the prison dimension. Their one line is the exclamation "Exterminate!", actually a piece of archive audio originally recorded by Nicholas Briggs for The Parting of the Ways. However, no evidence exists that their appearance in the film was duly licensed.
- In Dalek Hack, the player has the option to turn a Dalek's casing, shaped identically to the bronze Dalek, into any of the five colours of the New Dalek Paradigm.
