By a number of accounts, the star system of Gallifrey, (AUDIO: The Forever Trap [+]Loading...["The Forever Trap (audio story)"]) or the Homeworld, (PROSE: The Book of the War [+]Loading...["The Book of the War (novel)"]) had a single primary star, often referred to as just "the sun" from the vantage point of the Gallifreyans. History[[edit] | [edit source]]
Creation of a second sun[[edit] | [edit source]]
By some accounts, by the Doctor's era, Gallifrey technically had two suns. (TV: Gridlock [+]Loading...["Gridlock (TV story)"], Spyfall [+]Loading...["Spyfall (TV story)"], PROSE: The Bloodletters [+]Loading...["The Bloodletters (novel)"]) On Gallifrey, the second star seemed to rise in the East in the morning, making the mountains glow; (TV: Gridlock [+]Loading...["Gridlock (TV story)","Gridlock"]) both set in the South. The Monk believed that the Homeworld had not originally been part of a binary system but had been retroactively engineered into one by He-of-Many-Epithets as a precaution during the war against the vampires: the interaction of the orbital patterns of the two suns created a shifting "interference pattern" in the daylight which meant that even vampires resistant to ordinary sunlight could not walk on the Homeworld without burning. Because of these "mad orbital mechanics", the planet had "an unconventional day-night terminator": as the Monk put it, "the region in darkness [shrank] like an iris and close[d] like a fist". Something within the sun[[edit] | [edit source]]
The sun was large and golden-red. (AUDIO: The Forever Trap [+]Loading...["The Forever Trap (audio story)"]) After Chatelaine Thessalia slipped out of her home era and into the War Era universe through a crack in time, she travelled to an Order of the Weal outpost on the frontier in time, and, from there, broadcast a frantic message back to the ruling Houses of her own era, "insisting on a thorough spectroscopic analysis of the Homeworld's sun". She was then destroyed by a Violent Unknown Event. However, her warning was ostensibly ignored, with it taking until the Closed Session for the Houses to acknowledge the existence of the enemy. (PROSE: "Zo la Domini" [+]Part of The Book of the War, Loading...{"namedep":"Zo la Domini","1":"The Book of the War (novel)"}) Closer to the onset of the War, one of the praxis-caused visions reported in the Rivera Manuscript by a renegade who had been captured by agents of the Enemy and was "apparently set inside the Homeworld's sun". After the War[[edit] | [edit source]]
By one account, after Gallifrey was retroactively rescued from the final days of the Time War by the Doctor by being extracted into a pocket universe, seemingly by itself rather than with its entire solar system, (TV: The Day of the Doctor [+]Loading...["The Day of the Doctor (TV story)"]) and then returned to its original coordinates at the "extreme end of the space-time continuum", (TV: Hell Bent [+]Loading...["Hell Bent (TV story)"]) it came to exist within a "bubble universe", where it sat when the Spy Master ravaged it. There, both suns were seemingly visible in its sky. (TV: Spyfall [+]Loading...["Spyfall (TV story)"])
