Behind the Scenes
- On 19 February 2009, the BBC announced that Lindsay Duncan would play Adelaide in the second of the Doctor Who specials that will be aired in 2009. She has been stated to be playing "the Doctor's most strong-minded companion yet."[1]
- As with Michelle Ryan's character, Christina de Souza, who appears in the Planet of the Dead special, it has not yet been announced whether Adelaide is intended to be a one-off companion along the lines of Astrid Peth or (initially) Donna Noble or if she will appear in more of the specials or continue on into the Matt Smith era. Duncan has not been seen on set filming for Series 5 or David Tennant's final Doctor Who serial, suggesting that she will only appear in this episode.
- Actress Lindsay Duncan was 58 when she filmed the episode, making her the oldest actor to play a new companion to date. Whether her character will be of similar age, however, remains to be seen. This distinction will be brief, in any event, as the character of Wilfred Mott, played by 80-year-old Bernard Cribbins and depicted of similar age, has been announced as graduating to companion status in the final David Tennant specials. On the trailer, the Doctor said on a computer screen that she will die.
- Adelaide is one of only a few companions to die and the first to die without being "reborn" somehow in the new series.
