DWM comic strip studio

Barney visits the Phoenix Buildings in Butetown, Cardiff[4] where the art studio that the DWM comic strip is drawn in is located. Barney meets Mike the comic strip artist and asks him how he comes up with ideas for monsters. Mike tells him that he likes to use real everyday things then twist and disturb them.

Barney then explains the process of producing a comic strip, how each panel starts off as a rough sketch, which then inked and coloured; this is illustrated with images from COMIC: The Lodger.

Mike then gives Barney a monster masterclass in which Barney has a go a designing and drawing a monster. He decides that his monster will be a "Cat Pirate", and Mike gives him tips as he goes along to make it scarier - such as making the eyes smaller, and adding an eyepatch and chipped tooth. Mike is impressed with Barneys "Cat Pirate" and tells him he'll be using it in the next Doctor Who strip - COMIC: F.A.Q..
