Biography
Early life
Jimmy Tan was born in Shoreditch (AUDIO: The Vulpreen Encounter) to a mother and father who moved to England from China in the 1980s. (AUDIO: The Man From Gallifrey) He had a younger sister named Sophie who later moved to Birmingham. (AUDIO: The Vulpreen Encounter)
After leaving school, Jimmy worked at his father's print shop before joining the British Army. His father was proud of him, but his mother took some time to come around to the idea. Jimmy was the Ministry of Defence's liaison to the United Kingdom Space Agency's conference regarding the Starseeker and was saved from the botched demonstration by Hasper and his utility gauntlet. Kate Stewart took him to UNIT HQ afterwards and had him and Josh Carter watch the Eleven whilst he worked on a temporal modulator. Due to their proximity to the Eleven, Jimmy and Petronella Osgood were accidentally teleported to Hasper's TARDIS and, following the ordeal, he accepted a six-month attachment to UNIT. Jimmy took Jacqui McGee to a secure location when a Vulpreen platoon emerged from the Arch at the Royal Arsenal. Upon returning to the opened Arch, he incapacitated the Eleven with his personal electroshock device and tried to abort the airstrike that Josh had ordered in order to keep the Arch from being flooded with energy. He was too late, however, and the Arch was destroyed, freeing the Vulpreen from the Void World. (AUDIO: Ten Minutes in Hell)
Vulpreen invasion
After becoming a full member of UNIT, Jimmy went with Osgood aboard the Starseeker and was left stranded with her and his soldiers on the Vulpreen's asteroid ship following the Starseeker's destruction. The soldiers were all killed by a time bubble whilst Jimmy and Osgood were taken prisoner and subjected to psychic attack in advance of their interrogation. They escaped their cell, however, and, after a brief visit to Axos, returned to Earth through an arch in Norway. (AUDIO: The Vulpreen Encounter)
Jimmy, Kate, Osgood and Jacqui ran from the Vulpreen and were rescued by Naomi Cross. In Beijing, Jimmy and Kate prevented Commander Krillen from taking Jacqui through an arch and demanded that he hand her over, but she instead activated a temporal grenade to kill him and herself. Jimmy and Kate were taken to Axos where they managed to get free from their restraints, although Jimmy was injured and waited for Kate whilst she looked around. Yang Li later found Jimmy and returned with him through an arch to Norway. (AUDIO: Axos Unleashed)
Because of his injury, Jimmy went to the hospital but soon discharged himself. He helped Kate and Josh place explosives around the asteroid ship and volunteered to sacrifice himself to detonate them, but Josh drew the short straw and remained behind. Jimmy and Josh were held captive by the Vulpreen for six months and threatened by Varliss in an attempt to force Osgood into revealing how the Black Archive could be accessed. When Kate, Harry and Naomi infiltrated the base, Jimmy and Josh were freed, but Jimmy was soon recaptured by Varliss and taken with Osgood to the Tower of London through the use of a Super Arch. Sorgan aged and de-aged Jimmy with a time bubble to force Osgood into letting her into the Black Archive to find a particle isolator for Varliss, restoring him to his natural age once she agreed. Josh freed Jimmy using a time knife and, with Osgood, they chased the hypnotised Lorraine Forrester to a Vulpreen Arch in the tunnels beneath the Tower.
