Synopsis[[edit] | [edit source]]

A mystery under the sea, reaching our beaches.

Plot[[edit] | [edit source]]

The TARDIS arrives at UNIT Lab, out steps the Sixth Doctor and Peri Brown. Peri asks the Doctor where they are, and the Doctor replies that they’re following a signal sent to the TARDIS, and reminisces about old memories at UNIT. Peri asks him if he knows the place, and he confirms, saying he knows a lot, and that he used to work there. Peri, in disbelief, ask him again, asking if he had an actual job with a boss. He says this is his old lab at UNIT and that he was a consultant, the best of the best. Peri is skeptical. In the distance, Sgt Benton calls out for him.

The Doctor greets Benton, saying it’s a pleasure to see him again. Benton halts, saying he is not the Doctor, at least not one he knows. The Doctor tells him that he had false starts before arriving at the goal, asking him what he needs. Benton notices his new assistant, introducing himself to Peri. Peri introduces herself, saying she’s not his assistant and that she merely travels with him. The Doctor interrupts, asking if it was something important since he was called upon. Benton concurs, saying that there have been strange happening nearby with boats sinking after picking up a bizarre song. The Doctor is delighted about a new captivating mystery, a brain teaser for him. Benton gives the Doctor a copy of the coordinates.

The Doctor declares that there’s not time like the present, urging Peri back in the TARDIS. Peri protests that she barely managed to stretch her legs. Peri gives her a stern warning to not let her let him repeat himself. Benton asks if he needs any assistance, but the Doctor declines, saying he’s able to handle himself. Arriving in the TARDIS on a coastline, the Doctor declares that there’s no intelligent life, just like the rest of the planet. Peri protests his brashness, but the Doctor just retorts that he is sincere, saying he’ll go back to the TARDIS to run some tests. Peri says to herself that she will have to do something about his manners.

Peri continues to complain about the Doctor, when a creature is making some noise nearby. Peri deduces the sound comes from the sea, seeing a Sea Devil. Not knowing what it is, she yells for it to stay away from her. The Doctor comes back and tells her to get behind him, as another Sea Devil lets out a song, calming its brethren.

The Doctor asks the leader who it is and why its compatriot attacked them. The Sea Devil apologises, Introducing herself as Gamego, saying she wishes to talk. The Doctor says he doesn’t parlay with the Sea Devils, but Peri intervenes, saying they should listen as she saved them. The Doctor hesitates, as the song she let out matched the notes given by Benton. Peri asks him when he last listened to an authority figure. The Doctor concurs, asking Gamego what she demands. Gamego says she has none, but merely ask for help.

The Doctor asks if someone attacked the Sea Devils' hibernation chamber. Gamego confirms, saying that a dangerous chemical affected her kin, turning them rabid, and that only her song can calm them, saying they’re victims, not beasts. Peri says that she does not sound like someone who would attack a boat. Gamego says she knows who is destroying the ships. The Doctor asks her to illuminate them. Gamego says it was a long ship and draws its logo in the sand. Peri asks the Doctor if they haven’t seen that before. The Doctor says that they indeed have.

Back at UNIT Lab, Benton appears to be overjoyed that the Doctor didn’t suspect a thing, saying the decimation can begin. The Doctor questions his use of that word, saying it is quite a dreadful name for a military operation. Benton asks the Doctor if he is back already, to which the Doctor says he could not miss the chance to denounce him. Benton asks what he is on about, and the Doctor tells him that his submarine is taking down the ships and attacking the Sea Devils. Benton says that this is preposterous asking who he thinks he is to accuse them. Peri tells the Doctor not to antagonize the man with a gun. Just then, a "click!!" is heard, and Peri asks what that is.

Sgt. Benton yells for the Doctor and Peri to help him. Peri notes there are two Bentons, one of them covered in some pink snot, saying she’ll help him. The Doctor confronts another Benton, saying he knows the creature as a Zygon, as it transforms back to its true form. Peri notes that it is disgusting. The Zygon retorts that the Doctor might know of it but that he will never stop its plans. The Doctor tells that he already foiled its plan of using him to deal with the Sea Devils, labelling it foolish that he would not see through it. The Zygon says that that was merely a fraction and that its plans are already in motion. Benton intervenes, telling the Doctor to go ahead, as he will handle things at the Lab.

Arriving back at the coastline, the Doctor tells Peri that whatever the Zygon wants, its there. Gamego is shocked he returned, telling him he needs to leave as there is danger coming. When the Doctor asks, she says that there is an explosive moving under water. Peri is shocked, hearing a torpedo is coming, urging that they’ll leave, but the Doctor says there is no need, telling her to go back to the TARDIS as he will stop it from there. The TARDIS dematerialises.

The TARDIS materialises again. Gamego is delighted that he managed to save her kin. The Doctor says that disrupting the torpedo with the tractor beam was quite simple. Peri, however, says that the Doctor was sweating until the last moment. The Doctor tells Peri that she should not say that as he wanted to reassure her. Peri retorts that he wanted to reassure his ego, although the important part is that it is settled. Gamego thanks the Doctor, asking him to help her people, but the Doctor says he will leave the clean-up to UNIT, saying they can help them. He tells Peri to go back to the TARDIS.

Back at UNIT, Sgt Benton is questioning the Zygon, saying that he will have a lot to apologise for. The Zygon says it would have done more if not for the Doctor, but Benton retorts that it underestimates the Doctor, even if he is not as well-mannered as he was. The Zygon taunts Benton that all the humans are the same, bowing to a superior intellect, but Benton tells it to stop the insults as they won’t work, but might in jail.

On the coastline, Benton assures Gamego that UNIT’s best scientist has worked on a cure. Gamego says she trusts his words but is still getting accustomed to the future world she’s in. Benton acknowledges her shock. Gamego asks Benton to pour the cure into the sea, and he does so. The bewildered Sea Devil regains its stability. Gamego asks Aguma if she's alright, and Aguma says it’s like a haze has been lifted. Gamego thanks Sgt. Benton, but Benton says to thank the Doctor if she ever sees him again.
