The Nightmare Man is the first story of Series 4 of The Sarah Jane Adventures.
Synopsis
Part 1
Luke faces life-changing events, and Bannerman Road will never be the same again. But when Sarah Jane’s son has his first nightmare, he’s haunted by a dark figure from his dreams; The Nightmare Man. A strange entity is reaching out to our world through Luke, with terrible consequences for the whole Human race.
Part 2
With Luke, Clyde and Rani trapped in a bizarre dreamscape, Sarah Jane must fight alone! As the Nightmare Man grows stronger, only K-9 might hold the key. But can Luke summon the courage to face his adult life before the whole world is trapped in an endless nightmare?

Story notes
- After portraying the Nightmare Man, Julian Bleach became one of the few actors to have appeared in Doctor Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures.
- The Raxacoricofallapatorian is slightly physically different than previously-seen members of the Slitheen family. Its skin colour is a darker green which also covers its stomach, and it also has green fingernails at one point. In the closing credits, however, the Raxacoricofallapatorian is referred to as a Slitheen. It was also referred to as this on the official Sarah Jane website. [1]
- The Nightmare Man says "Children of Earth", which was the title of the third series of Torchwood.

Rumours
- K9 and Luke will leave in this story. This was proven true.
- A Raxacorciofallapatorian will make a cameo in this story as it was shown exploding on the team in a trailer and in a shot released for this episode the team are seen covered in goo in the exact same location as in the trailer. This was proven true.

- The Slitheen's fingernails change from being brown to green.
- Luke has an unclompleted Rubik's cube on his desk. Surely somebody of Luke's intelligence wouldbe able to complete this easily?
Continuity
- Luke mentions that on his first day at Park Vale, the Slitheen turned off the Sun. (SJA: Revenge of the Slitheen)
- The gang are again covered in slime when a Raxacoricofallapatorian explodes.
- Clyde mentions seeing Earth from space. (SJA Warriors of Kudlak)

Novelisation
This was to be one of the two Series 4 stories to be adapted into a novel, the other being Death of the Doctor. The books were cancelled.[2]
