So who is Tom and why does he want to build a fence with him?

Plot[[edit] | [edit source]]

Ianto goes to the social club after his father's funeral and learns more about him from Dezzy and Ginge, two old acquaintances of his father's who remember him as "Disco", a popular and funny man who did odd jobs around the estate. Disco never seemed the same after a fight with Ginge at Cinderella's on 22 August 1987, however. On 16 August of that year, a time-travelling Ianto, who needs to recharge his time machine every two hours, meets Disco at a pub, going by the name Tom, and agrees to help him put up a fence for Dezzy the next day. He claims to be a typist looking for a new home in Newport and tells Disco that they will not leave Dezzy's fence unfinished as Disco has so many other jobs, but Disco says that something always comes up three quarters of the way through a job to stop him. After a day of working, they go to the pub together.

Having been told in the future by Dezzy and Ginge that Disco had lost money betting on Goody Little Four Shoes in a horse race, Ianto advises him not to. He admonishes Disco for hurting his family when he finds him about to have sex with Dezzy, with whom he has been having an affair, by the pub's bins and walks him home, joining him the next day to carry on with the fence and play darts at The Merry Miller. Ginge, annoyed at having lost money by betting on Goody Little Four Shoes at Disco's suggestion, distracts and threatens Disco. Ianto resolves the tension between the two by claiming that Disco had been complimentary about Ginge the previous night, however, and afterwards climbs Newport Castle with Disco. There, Ianto admits that he has come from the future to fix Disco's life, but his attempts have changed his and Rhiannon's lives whilst Disco remains dead.

The time machine activates whilst Ianto is with Disco and he disappears, but Disco assumes that what he has seen is simply due to the cannabis he was smoking. Disco decides to stop drinking alcohol, be there for his children and not bet on horses despite Ianto trying to correct the timeline by getting him to bet on a losing horse. He decides to leave Glenda because he does not love her and turns down Ianto's offer of a drink to take his children to the Electro for the last time. Once Dezzy's fence is finished, Ianto gets Disco to go to Cinderella's with him by telling him that he is moving to London for a typing job and provokes Ginge into fighting him. The timeline is restored by Disco's reaction to his own temper at leaving Ginge in need of a walking stick and, back in the 2000s, Ianto admits that he and his father were both selfish. He toasts his fatherand hopes that he found peace or a good disco.
