Remote
- You may be looking for remote control.
The Remote were an unpredictable species produced by a Faction Paradox experiment.
Biology[[edit] | [edit source]]
Faction Paradox fitted the Remote agents with receivers that broadcast media directly into their nervous systems and biodata. (PROSE: "The Remote" [+]Part of The Book of the War, Loading...{"namedpart":"The Remote","1":"The Book of the War (novel)"}) The Remote were also rendered sterile, and were only able to reproduce using remembrance tanks. The remembrance tanks were also directly connected to the media, so with each generation, the Remote became more and more a part of the image-intensive culture fed to them by their receivers. History[[edit] | [edit source]]
Origins[[edit] | [edit source]]
Many human colonies in the 26th century were heavily dependent upon and connected to their medianets, regarding the broadcast images and celebrity icons as more important than the actual politics of their world. (PROSE: Interference - Book One) During the War in Heaven, Faction Paradox attempted to take advantage of this fact by influencing the media of said colonies, but this effort was interrupted by the House Military's Second Wave, (PROSE: "The Remote" [+]Part of The Book of the War, Loading...{"namedpart":"The Remote","1":"The Book of the War (novel)"}) which wiped out planets like Ordifica where the Faction was seen to have influence. (PROSE: Interference - Book Two, "Ordifica" [+]Part of The Book of the War, Loading...{"namedpart":"Ordifica","1":"The Book of the War (novel)"})
Refugees from these planets, evacuated by the Faction, established new colonies in safe zones of the Spiral Politic. One group from Ordifica was relocated to Anathema in 1799 and sent towards Earth. (PROSE: Interference - Book Two) Self left Giordano Bruno with the Remote on Anathema. (PROSE: De Umbris Idearum) The Faction intended to use the Remote as unpredictable shock troops against the Great Houses. However, when sent to fight the Houses on planets like Simia-KK98, most of the Remote were killed by the House Military. (PROSE: "Simia-KK98" [+]Part of The Book of the War, Loading...{"namedpart":"Simia-KK98","1":"The Book of the War (novel)"})
This drove the Faction to cut ties with the Remote under the Viewers and Listeners Protocols. (PROSE: "The Viewers and Listeners Protocols" [+]Part of The Book of the War, Loading...{"namedpart":"The Viewers and Listeners Protocols","1":"The Book of the War (novel)"}) Freed from Faction control, the Remote spread their forces throughout the universe and, enabled by time travel technology, became the unpredictable warriors they were always intended to be. They became unbound from the Protocols of Linearity, (PROSE: "The Remote" [+]Part of The Book of the War, Loading...{"namedpart":"The Remote","1":"The Book of the War (novel)"}) which allowed Compassion to be born during the War but travel in a pre-War timeship (PROSE: "Compassion" [+]Part of The Book of the War, Loading...{"namedpart":"Compassion","1":"The Book of the War (novel)"}) with the Eighth Doctor and Fitz Kreiner. (PROSE: The Blue Angel, The Taking of Planet 5, et al.) However, the Great Houses were able to neutralise the "Broken Remote" by manipulating their media. Later experiments[[edit] | [edit source]]
After abandoning the Remote colonies, Faction Paradox began Remote experiments in many other cultures, most notably 19th century Native American warrior tribes like the Kiowa, the Paiute, the Cheyenne, and the Arapaho. Like the 26th century human colonies with their celebrity loas, the warrior tribes were ideal because they believed in dakina spirits, they used ceremonial self-mutilation, they fetishised bones, and they used prolonged ritual torture as a means to achieve a communal altered state of consciousness. The tribes also already had fast and reliable communication through the peyote dream runners, and they historically had exhibited the ability to incorporate invaders' technologies into their lives; like the Remote, the Native Americans came to personify their weapons, which they considered to be living extensions of the wielder. Results of these experiments included Catch-the-Bear's war bonnet, the "Screaming Skull" rifle A'daltem Ano'nde, and the Nunaha'wu. Faction Hollywood was considered by The Book of the War to be a Remote colony. (PROSE: "Michael Brookhaven" [+]Part of The Book of the War, Loading...{"namedpart":"Michael Brookhaven","1":"The Book of the War (novel)"})
As noted in Genetic Politics Beyond the Third Zone, some believed the Arbitan of Marinus were a sociological experiment created by the faction responsible for the Remote experiments. The Conscience of Marinus operated very similarly to Remote receiver technology. Also Remote-like were the counter-cultural Voord who developed on Marinus and wore fetishistic clothing with receiver aerials. Gustous R Thripsted considered the Voord to be direct ancestors of his era's Remote. (PROSE: Interference) The Voord eventually evolved into Cybermen. (COMIC: The World Shapers, TV: The Doctor Falls)
In her 2649 encyclical De umbris idearum, Pope Beatrix II suggested that the Catholic Church brainwash the "Remotists" to be used as troops in the Beatrician Crusade. (PROSE: De Umbris Idearum)
During the Armistice, Faction Paradox experimented with technology to alter the perceptions of millions at once (PROSE: The End of the Beginning) using a Remote colony world overseen by Satyavan. The Remote on this world lived in zones resembling potential civilizations which could have existed had history gone differently, where the signals made them act as members of these civilizations. (PROSE: Jukebox)
City of the Saved[[edit] | [edit source]]
Human Remote were resurrected in the City of the Saved. Many gravitated towards Teletopia District. (PROSE: Of the City of the Saved...)
One Remote known as "The Prof" attended Allisheer St Marx's masked ball in AF 291. (PROSE: Of the City of the Saved..., Unification Theory)
