Nature

Some accounts seemed to depict Earth-616 as the same universe as the one occupied by the Doctor, (COMIC: Time Bomb! ^[+]Loading...["Time Bomb! (comic story)"], Clobberin' Time! ^[+]Loading...["Clobberin' Time! (comic story)"], etc.) while others depicted it as its own, distinct universe. Superheroes from this universe were once able to visit the BBC Television Centre during Red Nose Day 1991 to donate to Comic Relief, seemingly suggesting them to exist within the Doctor's universe; (COMIC: The Totally Stonking, Surprisingly Educational And Utterly Mindboggling Comic Relief Comic ^[+]Loading...["The Totally Stonking, Surprisingly Educational And Utterly Mindboggling Comic Relief Comic (comic story)"]) in contrast, other accounts, including some that were contemporary with those implying a shared universe, depicted the likes of Spider-Man as fictional on the Earth the Doctor usually visited. "Earth-616" refers to the main universe of Marvel Comics' comic books, and is part of the Marvel Multiverse. However, in the early days of the Marvel Multiverse, the line between parallel universes was much less defined as opposed to Marvel's current rigorous numbering system brought by handbooks in the 2000s. As such, in comics crossing over with the Doctor Who universe (DWU) from the 1980s and 1990s, Earth-616 is generally not treated as an entirely separate universe as it is in modern comics such as Clone Drive ^[+]Loading...["Clone Drive (comic story)"], due to the use of retroactive continuity on Marvel's part.

The first use of the name was styled "Earth 616" and appeared in the Captain Britain story Rough Justice ^[+]Loading...["Rough Justice (comic story)"], which also featured several members of the Special Executive originating from the "Black Sun War" trilogy of stories in Doctor Who Monthly. However, the first appearance of Earth-616 in any comic is considered to be 1939's Motion Picture Funnies Weekly #1, the first appearance of Namor the Sub-Mariner.
