Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]
"Earth-616" refers to the main universe of Marvel Comics' comic books, and is part of the Marvel Multiverse. However, in the early days of the Marvel Multiverse, the line between parallel universes was much less defined as opposed to Marvel's current rigorous numbering system brought by handbooks in the 2000s. As such, in comics crossing over with the Doctor Who universe (DWU) from the 1980s and 1990s, Earth-616 is generally not treated as an entirely separate universe as it is in modern comics such as Clone Drive [+]Loading...["Clone Drive (comic story)"], due to the use of retroactive continuity on Marvel's part.
The first use of the name was styled "Earth 616" and appeared in the Captain Britain story Rough Justice [+]Loading...["Rough Justice (comic story)"], which also featured several members of the Special Executive originating from the "Black Sun War" trilogy of stories in Doctor Who Monthly. However, the first appearance of Earth-616 in any comic is considered to be 1939's Motion Picture Funnies Weekly #1, the first appearance of Namor the Sub-Mariner. The first DWU appearance of Earth-616 is contentious; see Marvel Multiverse#Earth-616 for more information.
