- The Dominators have subjugated Bandrils, Monoids, Ogrons and Valethske.
- After Lethbridge-Stewart is knocked unconscious in a cave system in Dartmoor, he awakens, delirious on a field outside the caves, to see a familiar blue box disappearing before his eyes.

- This story is set a week after the events of the prequel short story The Dogs of War.
- The title is a pun on the concept of mutually assured destruction.
- A revised "Special Edition" with a new cover was released in November 2019.
- Andy Frankham-Allen has said Chorley's path throughout the Lethbridge-Stewart range was defined by the events that happened to him in this book.[1]
