Abel was an AI based system that contacted River Song in her cell at Lukito Bank and helped her escape. It was following her through time and space. It told her that it had labelled everyone in history as a criminal. River chastised him. It was part of The Matchmaker systems hitching the a lift in her vortex manipulator. It didn't wanted to leave River. It's binary code represented the Golden Ratio. She showed him the destruction it created. River tricked it back into the Vortex Manipulator to destroy it.
