Carriage

A carriage was a human land vehicle usually pulled by horses or other animals. Before the advent of the automobile, it was one of the primary means of transportation for humans over long distances.

Types of carriages included the chariot, (TV: The War Games) tikka-ghari, (PROSE: All-Consuming Fire) Hansom cab, (TV: The Talons of Weng-Chiang) hearse, (TV: The Unquiet Dead) Coach, (TV: Tooth and Claw) Brougham, Landau, Phaeton, Sociable, Victoria, (TV: Deep Breath) and stagecoach. (TV: The Woman Who Lived) Trains also had carriages. (TV: The Evil of the Daleks, Mummy on the Orient Express, The Woman Who Fell to Earth)

The Doctor's TARDIS was referred to as a carriage by several people, including Tegana (TV: 'The Roof of the World'), the Seventh Doctor, (TV: Ghost Light) Charlotte Brontë, (COMIC: Unearthly Things) Graham O'Brien, and Lord Byron. (TV: The Haunting of Villa Diodati)

Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson's body was carried to Paris in a hearse carriage when she died in 1764. (TV: The Girl in the Fireplace)

In 1869, the Ninth Doctor and Charles Dickens were involved in a carriage chase with Gabriel Sneed and Gwyneth after the latter pair kidnapped Rose Tyler. (TV: The Unquiet Dead)

In 1892, the Eleventh Doctor used a carriage driven by Strax while he maintained his retirement in Victorian London. Clara Oswin Oswald snuck onto the carriage and began asking him questions about his identity. (TV: The Snowmen)

In 1893, Strax had an extremely frustrating streak of carriage rides through Yorkshire, where he believed the horses pulling the carriages got lost. He executed three horses in a single week for their insubordination and nearly performed a fourth execution on another before a street urchin pointed out the way to Sweetville.
