Damien Boyd
Damien Boyd was a human man who lived in London, England during the 2020s and worked as a bike courier. He was a close friend of Thomas Hector "Hex" Schofield and was his flatmate when Hex first moved to London. Damien would often tell his friend that he thought he would get into an accident on his bike one day, but claimed he wasn't worried because Hex, a nurse, would be there to patch up any injuries. By September 2021, the two no longer lived together, but still worked the same jobs and remained friends.
His predictions of a bike accident proved true on the morning of 12 October 2021, when Damien was involved in a traffic accident on his bike and suffered a skull fracture, spinal fracture and haemopneumothorax. Severely injured, he was brought to the Accident and Emergency department at St Gart's Bankside Hospital, and given into the care of junior attending physician Dr Mark Mathias. Serving as a nurse on Dr Mathias' team, Hex was extremely distressed to be confronted with someone he knew as a patient for the first time in his career. At the time, the two friends had not seen each other in several weeks, although Damien planned to attend Hex's 23rd birthday celebrations at the White Rabbit pub on the evening of his accident. Ultimately, Damien was taken into surgery by Dr Stephen Farrer from the Nano-surgical department. Hex was relieved by the good fortune, as Farrer rarely worked on patients from the Accident and Emergency department and was known to be the best surgeon in the hospital.
In reality, Farrer took Damien not to help him, but to harvest his body parts for the creation of humanised Cybermen known as Cyber-humans on behalf of the European Council project C-Programme. Pressed to find suitable matching tissue for an emergency graft on Cyber-human Subject Four, Damien was located by executive security officer David Garnier. Due to the traumatic and likely fatal nature of his head and spinal injuries, he was deemed an acceptable sacrifice by C-Programme personnel. Later, when Hex went to the Nano-surgical department on the thirty-first floor of St Gart's to check on the status of his friend, Dr Farrer revealed that Damien was dead and claimed he and his team had managed to stabilise the patient before he went into cardiac arrest several times during surgery and became asystole. Farrer offered to allow Hex to see his deceased friend's body in the hospital morgue, but Hex declined. After his death, Damien's body was brought to C-Programme facilities and harvested for organ parts needed for the humanization of the Cybermen.
The following day, while investigating C-Programme activities alongside Ace McShane, Hex learned that Dr Farrer had lied and his friend was never taken to the morgue. Later that same day, Hex infiltrated C-Programme facilities with the Seventh Doctor, where he found Damien among the dozens of bodies despoiled by C-Programme for their organs. Hex was greatly disturbed by the state he found his friend in and struggled to look away, but the Doctor helped him, reminding his new companion that he would feel better remembering Damien as he has known him, rather than how he was after C-Programme despoiled his remains.
