Game between the Toymaker and the Fourteenth Doctor

From Tardis Wiki, the free Doctor Who reference

A game was played between the Toymaker and the Fourteenth Doctor, the second game played by the Doctor against the Toymaker in their trilogy of games, following the Trilogic Game between the Toymaker and the First Doctor, and preceding the game between the Toymaker and the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors.

History[[edit] | [edit source]]

The game occurred in 1925 Soho, when the Doctor, spurred on by the Toymaker mocking his recent tragedies, challenged him to a game. The Toymaker accepted, conjuring a pack of cards. With Donna Noble watching, the Doctor declared they would play "the simplest game of all": Cut. For this game, they would each cut the deck and the winner was whoever's card was highest.

As the declarant, the Doctor established the game's rules: they would play with the Toymaker's conjured deck, the Doctor would cut the deck first and the Ace of the deck would be the highest valued card. Despite Donna's concerns that the Toymaker would cheat, the Doctor assured her the rules would be followed because they "bound" the Toymaker's own existence.

The Doctor cut first, landing an Eight of Clubs. The Toymaker then cut, revealing the King of Hearts, leaving the Toymaker the winner.

The Toymaker then prepared to declare his prize for winning, but the Doctor reminded him it was one-all, given his first incarnation won the previous game. Therefore, the pair had to play a third game to decide the absolute winner in a best of three. Conceding, the Toymaker agreed and used the fact he won to declare their next game must occur in 2023.
