Malendia was one of the two largest countries on Világ. It was a hereditary monarchy, but like its neighbour Galen, the power of the monarchy had become largely symbolic. Despite this, the Sixth Doctor stated that the royal family there still were revered and seen as "role models, if not policymakers" according to the Sixth Doctor. (AUDIOArrangements for War)

It had been at war with Galen for a century or so by the time the Sixth Doctor and Evelyn arrived. The Kingdom Alliance, the unification of the two countries through the marriage of the Princess of Galen Krisztina and the Prince of Malendia, Viktor, was intended to end the war. It flared up again when it was revealed Krisztina still loved Reid over Viktor. Bouts of violence, protests and terrorist attacks occurred after this, most orchestrated by Plenipotentiary Suskind, obliterating the Alliance and sparking war off again, killing over 400,000 on both sides in less than two weeks. Paramount Minister Mortund was shot in an assassination attempt, but survived. The Galen ambassador to Melendia was one of 18 killed in a drive by shooting.

It was one of the countries invaded by the Kilorian invasion, with most of northern Melendia being "in flames", according to Justice Rossiter. Joining forces with Galen and Kozepén, it was able to defeat the invaders. (AUDIO: Arrangements for War)

In the year after the invasion, it was later absorbed into an new superstate alliance called the Triumvirate, led over by the Principal Triumvir (AUDIOThicker Than Water)
