Marcus was a rather officious and unsavoury monk. He told Peri Brown that he could help in her plan to save the island. In his youth he was a violent man, and thought that God had put him on the island for this very reason. He showed the Sixth Doctor that creatures they had seen was inscribed on the casket of their bishop that was preserved as a shrine in a catacomb.[statement unclear] He stayed to protect the island whilst his brethren escaped with the holy relics.
