Merrick Kingdom

According to one account, Sara's father was employed by MM Rocket Co. Inc. before they were attacked by space pirates on their journey back to Earth on her 21st birthday. She was the only survivor. She traced the pirates and destroyed their headquarters and it was this that inspired her to join the Space Security Service herself. (PROSE: Top Secret [+]Loading...["Top Secret (feature)"])
Another account claimed Merrick was a senior figure in the SSS, serving as a member of its council during a war with the Daleks. At one point during the war, he was part of a landing party on Skaro where he collected samples of Varga plants. The council received intelligence that the planet where Merrick’s daughter Lena lived was about to be attacked by the Daleks. Despite Merrick’s efforts, the council chose to do nothing to safeguard the source of the intelligence leading to Lena being among those killed when the Daleks wiped out the planet. Anya refused to forgive her grandfather for this, not speaking to him for years.
In his retirement on Neptune, Merrick became involved with Dr Abigail Crane’s project to develop guns using Varga venom, cultivating Varga plants beneath his villa for this purpose. When the SSS cancelled the project, Abigail decided to seek private buyers and orchestrated a demonstration under the guise of a pirate attack on a spaceport. After discovering Anya had been caught up in it, escaping in escape pod along with the Tenth Doctor and Mark Seven, Merrick arranged for her to be brought to Neptune. He tried to reconnect with Anya however she and her companions soon discovered the Varga project. Merrick refused to let Abigail kill Anya, but reluctantly went along with her plan to leave the Doctor and Mark in the path of Mechonoids destroying the landscape for colonisation. As they departed, Anya attacked Abigail resulting in her firing a Varga gun which struck Merrick. He let Anya escape and attacked Abigail under the venom’s influence.
