Penelope Gate's first husband
Penelope Gate's first husband was a 19th century Londoner.
He was "toffee with numbers" but prone to giving "interminable lectures" to Penelope in the dining room in the evening. The two had a son, but the child died in its infancy. By 1883, Penelope found her domestic life with him suffocating and yearned for an escape from it, whether it be a divorce or something more fantastical.
She ended up beginning with the latter option, perfecting a rudimentary time machine and travelling first to 1996, then to 16th century Japan. During this adventure, it became necessary for her to hide in a trunk with her travelling companion Joel Mintz, and she reflected with amusement on what her husband would say if he could see her "locked in a box with another man". She eventually got back to her home time, where the Seventh Doctor believed she would obtain her divorce.
