Talk:UNIT HQ, City of London

From Tardis Wiki, the free Doctor Who reference

Title[[edit source]]

Seems like naming it "UNIT Tower" is the most straightforward and what I've seen most people in the fandom calling it. Forgottrek 06:28, 15 June 2024 (UTC)

Agreed. Fractal 12:00, 15 June 2024 (UTC)
I am little hestitant given I think it is useful for the UNIT HQ to follow the same naming system, more or less, but I will begin looking for occasions where "UNIT tower" is used:
It also appears "tower" is left uncapitalised. I'll continue to update this when I find more.
Edit (19/06/2024): added details from The Giggle.
Edit (20/06/2024): added details from doctorwho.tv. 12:07, 15 June 2024 (UTC)
Found a new and hilarious one: "She wasn't sure what she might find in UNIT Tower (or 'the Big Penguin' as it was known among Londoners)." (PROSE: 73 Yards [+]Loading...{"page":"77","1":"73 Yards (novelisation)"}) Jamjam77 23:51, 4 September 2024 (UTC)

How about then, we have UNIT HQ, City of London and then combine this page with the Power of the Doctor HQ under a section "UNIT tower" and "122 Leadenhall"? Forgottrek 06:03, 19 June 2024 (UTC)

There should be separate pages for the two different UNIT HQs at the same location, since UNIT Tower is recurring and distinct. I think UNIT Tower makes sense as a page name, and the earlier one can be "UNIT HQ (The Power of the Doctor)", and 122 Leadenhall Street as a page for the address could link to both pages. Simple as. Thw Power of the Doctor UNIT HQ is actually in a sightly different place, as the two of them are on the same street but not in the exact same place. I've done a lot of research about the weird geography of the two towers (no not those two). 15:40, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
Oh, yeah, and I've proposed UNIT HQ (The Power of the Doctor) should be merged into 122 Leadenhall Street, so if this page was to be merged with TPotD one, then they'd both be on the 122 Leadenhall Street page. 16:39, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
Unit HQ (The Power of the Doctor) and Unit HQ (The Star Beast) with various redirects seems like the best and most straightforward option to me, with 122 Leadenhall Street being an overview page for the specific address where both of them are located, with us able to discuss the location discrepancies on this overview page. Well no, technically The Star Beast's UNIT HQ isn't located at 122, its located in the middle of Leadenhall Road. It's weird and I don't know why the SFX team did it, but the two HQs aren't in the exact same place. 19:11, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
Just looked through doctorwho.tv and "UNIT HQ" is used in one article, and, for the first time, "UNIT Tower" is used in another. These aren't in-universe so they should only be used as redirects, not anywhere on a page. 18:04, 20 June 2024 (UTC)

So looking over the evidence so far, my support for a rename to UNIT Tower is diminished for three reasons: 1., there are other UNIT towers, such as the Tower of London and The Power of the Doctor one; 2., as it is only stylised as "UNIT tower" in all the valid sources that use it, it appears to be less of a name and more of a description; 3. "UNIT HQ" is used so many times in The Giggle (novelisation), I feel we really would need a strong source to contend it.

I guess then my concern moving forward is that the current title is still not what anyone calls this in conversation or in dialogue "UNIT HQ, City of London", so the page should be more accurately titled. UNIT HQ seems alright, and I don't think anyone is gonna be confused that "UNIT HQ (tower)", for example, isn't about the already named and defined Tower of London. Is the editorial stance of this wiki to be prescriptive (IE, we don't care what 99% of the fandom is calling it, we're going to be needlessly verbose in our article titles) or descriptive (IE, it may not perfectly follow form, but it's less confusing more practical to use a title at least close to what most people would recognise it as). (EDIT for punctuation, formatting) Forgottrek 05:51, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
Um, it's a perfectly standard thing in this Wiki and Wikipedia to add the location to a page name if more than one location of the same name exists. Like, idk, Perth, Australia and Perth, Scotland.
Is the location called "UNIT HQ"? Yes. Is it in the City of London? Yes. So "UNIT HQ, City of London" is perfectly fine theoretically.
And I know an issue exists with The Power of the Doctor's UNIT HQ, as it is located in the exact same place, so I was going to solve it with the merge into 122 Leadenhall Street. Kate did indicate in TPoTD that the tower they set up base in existed before.
Is this the best solution? Idk. As @Aquanafrahudy pointed out above, perhaps the best solution is just story dabs, if we don't go ahead with the merger. 11:48, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
I like Aquanafrahudy's suggestion of "Unit HQ (The Power of the Doctor)" and "Unit HQ (The Star Beast)". Fractal 11:51, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
I could live with that.Forgottrek 04:48, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
I agree that UNIT HQ (The Star Beast) is good! Still leaves room for a [UNIT Tower] rename if the name becomes ubiquitous in the future (I notice its capitalized form is used often in DWM 605). TheChampionOfTime 14:24, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
