The Great Shopping Bill was the fourth story (fifth counting COMIC: The Lost Dimension: The Twelfth Doctor) of the third year of Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor comic story series, published in 2017.
The story featured Nardole's first appearance in the ongoing Twelfth Doctor comic series, although his first comic appearance was in COMIC: The Lost Dimension. It also featured Missy's first appearance in the ongoing comic series.

- Bill convinced the Doctor to watch Back to the Future. However, all the Doctor can do is criticise the portrayal of time travel in the film.
- It's implied the Doctor finds Everlasting Gobstoppers from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, saying he knew that they made matches, but not Gobstoppers.
- The Vault has a dimensional stabiliser.
- Pathicols feed on the empathy of others.
- The Doctor likes Nanjura fruit juice.
- Nanjura fruit juice shouldn't be given to Silurians.

- The robots at the Übermarket begin sentences with a phrase between two plus signs (e.g. "+Statement+"). In one panel, it mistakenly begins with two plus signs ("++Directive+")
- The Doctor mistakenly refers to Back to the Future's Marty McFly as "Morty". Bill replies saying "Morty's a whole other thing", a reference to Rick and Morty.
- The Doctor would quote Back to the Future by saying "Great Scott!"
- The Doctor quotes Star Wars in saying "Boring conversation anyway".
- The three robots seen close up have the designations "N-e-1-4-10-S", "X-i-10-2-C-u", and "N-i-4-N-i" . Read aloud these sound (approximately) like: "Anyone for tennis", "Exciting to see you", and "An eye for an eye".

- Missy was let out of the Vault and into the TARDIS once before. (TV: Empress of Mars)
- Raxacoricofallapatorians (TV: Aliens of London / World War Three et al), Trees of Cheem (TV: The End of the World), Thomas Kincade Brannigan and Valerie Brannigan (TV: Gridlock) are shopping at the Übermarket.
- Deserts, sweets, and pudding sign reads "Wibbly-wobbly, limey-wimey jelly." (TV: Blink et al)
- "Impossible soufflé grills" are on sale at the Übermarket. (TV: Asylum of the Daleks, The Snowmen et al)
- Bill tells Olivia Gowland that she lost her mother. (TV: The Pilot)
- The Doctor finds Jelly Babies at the Übermarket. (TV: The Dominators et al)
- The Doctor says Bill smiles when she doesn't understand something. (TV: The Pilot)
- The Doctor doesn't like the Übermarket robots due to their similar shape to the Daleks. The robots say "Seek! Locate! Restrain!", similar to the Daleks' "Seek! Locate! Exterminate/Destroy!" (TV: Destiny of the Daleks et al)
