From Tardis Wiki, the free Doctor Who reference

The Faceless Ones was first broadcast on BBC1 in 1967. Since then, it has received a number of further broadcasts in other countries. Notably, this story did not include New Zealand, despite them receiving prints. However, due to the fact most of its episodes are missing, new broadcasts of the original production are unlikely. The 2020 animated reconstruction does, however, provide a means for further broadcasts and has already done so on BBC America.

The following is a list of known broadcasts, compiled from a variety of sources and under some assumptions (for details, see the footnotes and references).

Censorship[[edit] | [edit source]]

As was standard at the time, the episodes underwent a censorship process before being broadcast in Australia. There were 3 areas identified in episode 1:[36]

  • one note stated to keep a shot of a ray gun being aimed but then to cut to a body on the floor, presumbably skipping the body being shot
  • another note stated to reduce shots of a hand emerging from a cupboard
  • another note stated to reduce close up shots of the "faceless creatures" (Chameleons)

The episodes were reviewed by censors in New Zealand but determined to be unsuitable to broadcast.[37][38]

Non-broadcasts[[edit] | [edit source]]

All 6 episodes were receieved and reviewed by New Zealand censors in August 1969. They received a "Y" classification and so did not air.[37][38]

Despite paperwork indicating that the episodes were sold to Zambia by March 1970, The Faceless Ones was only broadcast 3 years later.[37]
