Edit History?

CzechOut, this is a little trivial but I read the descriptions for all of the discussion boards and it didn't seem like my question was appropriate for any of them, even Help.

My question is how can I see the edit history of a Page? I just can't find the option to view this, like you can under History on "the other wiki". Is this view only available to Admins? It seems like it would be pretty simple feature since lots of users refer to other people's edits or reverts of edits. But I can't find it. : ( Badwolff ☎ 21:13, May 24, 2013 (UTC)

Photo License Accident

I was uploading a photo of River's diary and I think I accidentally forgot to add the license to it. I realized right after I clicked to add the photo, it should've been labeled as a Screencapture, and I've been trying to figure out how to correct the mistake but I haven't been able to find a way to add the license after the fact. I know the photos have to have one and it was just a stupid oversight on my part, so I wanted to let you know so it doesn't appear that I was intentionally trying to leave off the license. Revealing dab terms in dab pages

I'm a little bit confused about one aspect of your recent edits at Out of Time. Your edit summaries seem to imply that revealing dab terms is preferable, even though all the information in the term is then immediately revealed in more detail after the link. For example, in...

• Out of Time (CON episode), an episode of Doctor Who Confidential broadcast alongside The Big Bang.

the dab term just gets repeated in fill sentence format. The same applies to the other two.

Now this is fine for out-of-universe lists like this. The problem really arises when you end up with something like this:

• Lucy (Human Nature) (PROSE: Human Nature)
• Lucy (Evolution) (PROSE: Evolution)
• Lucy (Slow Decay) (PROSE: Slow Decay)
• Lucy (Trace Memory) (PROSE: Trace Memory)
• Lucy (The Vampires of Venice) (TV: The Vampires of Venice)
• Lucy (Wishing Well) (PROSE: Wishing Well)
• Lucy (The Ratings War) (AUDIO: The Ratings War)

This is simply unreadable! Obviously, Lucy is not in such a state, but you seem to be implying that it should be. So is there a line to be drawn here, or do you truly believe that we should reveal all dab terms? If so, why?

Re images - I pulled some images out of the Bernice image category, but they're almost exclusively cover pictures for audio & prose, so none of them really match the ideas we have. Mostly I just went with images that have a good close-up of her face. Shambala108 ☎ 02:01, May 28, 2013 (UTC)

Society vs Planets?

I noticed you moved the categories Skaro, Traken, and a few others to the "Society" category, rather than planets. I changed some of them back without really thinking about it, but I thought I should get your reasoning (does it have anything to do with planets being part of the Game of Rassilon now?) before I dug myself any further into a possible faux pas. Gotcha'. I undid Traken and Skaro, but I'm a little hazy on Sol System planets. I mean with the other two, I get that recursion's a factor, and no other category really fits, but Sol System planets already has another category and could probably be put under Mutter's Spiral planets (which I'm having a hard time finding any recursion on). Really? I kind of remember you getting blocked temporarily for editing a MediaWiki page that was a long list of every piece of profanity that you could ever imagine. Did you rethink, and get rid of that page?

Anyway, that's actually good news. I've had to refrain from adding things like Owen's amazingly complete definition of "fuck buddy" in fear of getting blocked by the abuse filter.

I don't remember what it's called. If I did, I'd have linked you. But it was just a long paragraph of almost every single possible swear word and combination. I tried to find it through your block and abuse logs, but it didn't seem to be there. I do distinctly remember such a page. Bad words

Might as well put it under a new heading here too. Actually, here is the dialogue in which it comes up in Out of Time:

Owen: We could be fuck buddies.

Diane: What's a fuck buddy?

Owen: It's, um, it's a friend that you have casual sex with.

So the article would say something like:

A fuck buddy was, according to Owen Harper, "a friend that you have casual sex with." Owen offered Diane Holmes such a relationship after she accidentally travelled from 1953 to 2007 through the Cardiff Rift. (TV: Out of Time)

You see? Not just a page for the sake of having the word "fuck" in it, but just a nicely defined term getting its own page. This seems fine to me.

I'm currently in the process of adding opening/closing dates for Doctor Who exhibitions to day of the year articles. But, once we split the pages up, where will they go? I suppose the most fitting page would be releases, although they're not technically being "released". Think on this, and get back to me if you have an answer.

Trafalgar Square

I don't see why you had to delete it. My intent was to not include the video, and just ignore the second half of it, and it's not really part of the story anyway. I'm assuming that the spoiler you're referring to is the filming spoiler in the second half, right? Where in the now-deleted article did I actually include any of those spoilers? I'm fairly sure that the answer should be nowhere.

I originally asked if I could create the page at thread:130675, but seeing as no one ever answered it, I figured that there would be nothing wrong with the page. Once again, I only discussed the Strax scene — so how does that violate T:SPOIL?

To elaborate, if you think that mentioning that Strax spotted the Eleventh Doctor in Trafalgar Square is the violation, the Field Report is actually an officially released story. It was released a little while ago in fact. Howling Message All Caps

Don't know if this is significant enough to put here, but I entered an all-caps word on a Howling discussion post and it said to post a reason on [link to this page]. I was just using the word "objection", quoting it in all-caps as it appears in the Phoenix Wright series. Religion

Argh, I was getting so far!! I didn't think my categorial expansion would be controversial. Note that I did not add people to these categories simply because they attended a church. Everyone in the new categories are either religious leaders, or very directly identify with a religion. Many of those are specifically organisations, the contents members of these organisations. I have categories there named "followers of" and "members of" — very clearly members of those religions. I understand there might be a blur in the DWU between Catholics and Protestants, so we could always group them together into one central category:Christians if necessary. Apart from that, I do not see any issues.

The Forums

Hi, Czech. If you are talking about the orange sticky message, it does help that it provides a link to The Howling. But I think there are other Forums (Discontinuity, Help, etc.) that aren't listed on the main Forum list.

Here's the thing...when I was first discovering this place (and we are talking about the first months, not the first day), I'd make a post on a Forum or respond to another person's thread and I usually couldn't find it later to check in on the conversation. I'd go to the main Forum list, go into each of the Forums, find that most of them were inactive and only at some point later would I find that I'd gone to The Howling or had actually commented on a Talk page.

Now, I realize that the burden should be on me to remember where I posted. But, like I said earlier, it would be helpful for others who fumbled around like me if there was one location where all of the Forums (obviously not the Talk pages though) were listed. This sticky does help remind people about The Howling...although it's still not clear to me why it can't just get a regular listing on the page.

Well, Czech, it seems like every time I post a request or suggestion it leads you to telling me why it's not feasible (which makes me think that the wiki software is inflexible) but I always appreciate you taking the time to explain the situation to me. Admins on other wikis might just post "Ain't going to happen" but you use it as a teachable moment.

That said, I'm confused by "you'll automatically be notified when new activity in that thread arises". Does this mean I should be getting email messages? I also thought I could always check my Contributions Page but I'm not sure if The Howling posts would appear here.

As for not liking your spoiler policy, I just don't feel strongly about it because almost everything I read on this wiki is a spoiler for me. I haven't seen many Classic episodes and I end up doing a lot of reading up on Classic episodes that explain some aspect of the characters or how the DWU works. So, I know how a lot of storylines end before I'll ever see them on screen. I also didn't see the new series in order (I've caught up watching reruns) so, for example, while I've read up on The Girl in the Fireplace, I actually only saw the episode two weeks ago when it was rerun on BBCAmerica.

And I think the policy is too strict. I understand not disclosing storyline plot points. But to even squelch major news announced by the BBC, that is extensively published and talked about, seems silly. Anyone who is a fan would have to not have any contact with other DW websites, not read Twitter or other media to not be aware of what's going on. And I think the fact that even saying that something is "going on" could be interpreted as a spoiler seems extreme to me.

But, that said, I'm not going to intentionally violate the rules of this site and I hope to not accidentally do so either. This is why I've moved most of my contributions off of Talk Pages and onto The Howling, so I don't inadvertently cross some line in your spoiler policy. Yes, I know that Talk Pages aren't for conversations but the fact is that people DO raise questions on them to clarify elements of the storyline so there is some back and forth going on there. Wow, you've given me a lot to think about. It's clear you're really immersed in all-things-wiki and I usually just visit 3 or 4 times a week so we have very different perspectives to view it. Casual visitors like me just want to find what information they want in the easiest way possible. You have a much broader and deeper view of the entire wiki but I'll try to wrap my mind around the complexities of keeping things running smoothly and keeping things tidy.

One point though...you said,

If you look at Wikipedia, which is a much more conventional deployment of MW, you won't find forums or chat modules at all. It's just talk pages, really

But I do know there are Forums, of a type on Wikipedia, for people who want to know more about editing, if there are disputes/editing wars, questions of creating or deleting categories, etc. If I recall, they are just formatted like a Wiki Talk Page but conversations do happen on wiki operations. But I don't think they do have standard message board formats.

I do participate on other wikis that do have active discussion threads. I think that since wikis are basically collaborations on a subject of interest to fans, it's almost impossible to NOT have conversations somewhere because there are differing interpretations of storyline, what's important and what's trivial, etc.

But I do appreciate what the main purpose of THIS wiki is and I'm grateful for your polite and comprehensive responses to my questions. Badwolff ☎ 18:49, June 10, 2013 (UTC)

Heya, Czech. I've just had a complaint from a member of the public about a section of the front page, specifically the "Even the BBC spoils stuff" header to the spoiler article. I was told of the issue on Skype, hence why I said "member of the public". It's the opening title of the no spoilers article on the front page, as by us saying "Even the BBC spoils stuff" in large letters on our home page does seem at first glance like we're attacking the BBC. Re:K9 Cast

It was a while ago, but I remember I got everything on the cast and crew from the end credits. Normally, the cast list on the K9 episode credits as you said only have the main cast, important guest cast, and stunt performers, but I'm certain that list of extras did come from the end credits of Dream-Eaters, I remember it clearly. --MrThermomanPreacher ☎ 18:16, June 8, 2013 (UTC)

Battle concludes

Thanks for putting me forward as the person to write it. It was actually a nightmare to try and work out how to end it. The story includes so much, and brought in stuff that wasn't part of the initial starship vote which made it incredibly unwieldy even for the contributors writing it. Why is 8 June locked? I wanted to add info there. CzechBot's edit summary says that you wanted to "prevent people from enthusastically spreading whatever news is hitting the British press on 2 June 2013". But 8 June isn't 2 June, which incidentally isn't even locked! Did you just assume that we'd have more information a week later? Anyway, I can assure you, as one who follows spoilers closely, that no information was released on that day. Could you perhaps unlock it so that I can do my work, or, if not, then why is that?

Actually, I have another question, this time concerning the categories. If you follow the tree, category:days of the year eventually goes back to category:Time-Space Visualiser. Except its subcategories are real-world. This wasn't a problem originally, since the real-world info was in the bts section.

My proposal is that category:days of the year be an umbrella hidden category only for GOR and the subcats. In-universe days need to have their own subcategory (can't think of a name), which would be a subcat of category:dates. We'd need to have category:real world dates (subcat of category:real world), which would include the real world day cats. Sorry, I'm typing this on my phone in a very noisy metro (subway? we call them metros) station, so I can't really concentrate. Correct me if any of that made no sense.

Days

In case you didn't notice, I have completed the split-up stage of the project, and I have cleaned up most pages in the manner we discussed in the process. I actually began writing this message to ask a question about TV Action dating, but then I realised that I made a horrible miscalculation and there is no actual problem. So no need for that. Anyway, now I'm adding comic releases, going through each issue of each magazine. WLH reports won't give me every release, since we write things like "27 March - 22 May", so how am I expected to find the six releases in between? Just an update; I am very happy with my progress.

No, I don't think the publisher's absolutely necessary. Majority were published by Target. Mind you, there were the Mullers, and the ones by Pinnacle Books, and three by BBC Books so far: The Novel of the Film, Scream of the Shalka and Shada. But those are the exceptions! Would you suggest only mentioning the publisher in the first one, or never mentioning it unless it's not Target?

On a separate point, remember the date redirects I think you created a few years back? Like: 1st January redirects to 1 January? Are you planning on doing the same for the new pages? So: 1st January (releases) => 1 January (releases)?

Oh, and a third, completely unrelated topic! I have been getting "Emergency Protocol One" error messages daily for at least a week! They seem to always happen when no one else is around but me (I guess because that's the middle of the night US time, where a lot of our editors are from. Oh, and the middle of the night here too :P), and last for around 10 minutes. They're not that bad, but they're certainly inconvenient! I'll be glad to take a screenshot next time I see a message if you want. Or check anything else.

Well, Monsters from Outer Space has "science fiction" written across its cover. And we know that Jules Verne's and Ivan Asimoff's works are science fiction as well. (COMIC: The Screams of Death, The Free-Fall Warriors) So we could create a cat for that, but I suppose we have to draw the line somewhere so that others don't go overboard.

Yet another day section

I usually get rid of {{DeleteDate}}, and put in a hidden message with the name of the story where the day is featured. Then I (if I remember) put a note on my user page, and finally read/watch the story whenever I get the chance. I do regularly check the talk pages when I'm editing day pages, but it would be helpful if maybe you could put a hidden message?

You don't have any opposition to removing the {{DeleteDate}}s, do you? The tag states that it should be deleted unless it appears in a valid source. Once we know it appears in a valid source, I don't think it's wrong to remove the tag before actually writing the entry. Besides, it helps me find out which days I will find info for, and which I might not.

There really isn't much, but I'll give you what there is (leaving out Peri and Erimen's snide remarks):

Telling them where to look for Tegan: "Try third man."..."It's a fielding position like second slip."

Then he just gives the single words: "Gulley" and "Silly Point". He then mentions that Dilley is "quite a fine deep backwards square leg."

Who is a Companion?

I read the old discussion on questionable companions. I know you guys never really came to a conclusion, and probably dread the idea of returning to the debate. Still, Id like to offer some input. I am currently working on a poster for the 50th with all of the doctors and companions over the past 50 years. When I tried to use the TARDIS wikia, I honestly wasnt thrilled with your list. I found it to be lacking some characters that I think important and containing others I would have passed up. This forced me to create my own set of guidelines.

Let me say, this list is only for the TV episodes, and your current breakdown for Prose, Comic, Audio, ect is rather brilliant. Again, my format only affects TV companions.

Also, The 3rd Doctor is the exception to this list (as he was the only Doctor grounded to Earth, he also must follow a separate set of rules).

For the rest of the Doctors, they are a companion if they meet any of the following 3 criteria:

• Appeared in more than one episode and traveled in the TARDIS.
• Traveled in the TARDIS and died in their first story.
• Invited to travel in the TARDIS with The Doctor, when he had no other companion.

With this logic:

• Jackie Tyler, Wilfred Mott and Brian Williams are companions because they each appeared in more than one episode and all traveled in the TARDIS at least once.
• Adelaide Brooke counts as a companion because she traveled in the TARDIS and died in that episode. However, Mia and Yuri traveled in the TARDIS but did not die. And because Mia and Yuri were only in the one episode, they do not count as companions.
• Astrid Peth is a companion because she was invited to travel with the Doctor, and despite only being in one episode, it was when the Doctor was traveling alone. Christina De Souza is NOT a companion (because she did not travel in the TARDIS and was not invited) Likewise, Madame de Pompadour does not count (because she was invited, but only appeared in one episode while the doctor already had companions with him.)

Basically, I'm using the "traveled with" or "invited to travel" idea, but "cleaning it up" with the "Death clause" (If they were important enough to him to get a ride in the TARDIS, and died before we got to see more of them, we will infer that they would have been seen again) and the "Doctor is Alone clause" (When the Doctor is alone, he seeks a companion). These clauses are straight forward and make sense and allow pretty much everything through that should get through (in my opinion).

As for the 3rd Doctor, we simply look at his regular associates at UNIT. (This includes Shaw, Grant, Smith, Stewart, Yates, Benton). Simple. [[1]]

Something Borrowed

I only edited those pages because of a faulty link. I changed Something Borrowed to Something Borrowed (TV story), which I am allowed to do because there is another story with the same title, (Something Borrowed (short story)). The links were clearly linking to the TV story and not the faulty page that should be deleted.

May I remind you that I do edit in other ways on this wiki and that you changed all links to The End of Time because there is two stories with the same title in the DWU. If that is against TARDIS policy then both you and me are guilty of the same crime. The page "Something Borrowed" itself says that it should be deleted with means that no pages need to link to it, and the reason why it hasn't yet been deleted is because pages like Torchwood SUV still link to it.

I was merely trying to avoid confusion between to different stories that you yourself said was okay. You are giving the impression that you are throwing all of my well-meant edits back in my face. Hi. I'm sorry for my bad manner earlier, but I wrongly assumed that you already knew about Something Borrowed (short story) and that you were using me as some sort of scapegoat.

I thought I might as well inform you that there are four pages linking to The End of Time and seven pages linking to Planet of the Dead. As we both know, there are two stories for each of those titles and that those links should not be there. I would change them myself, but I doubt that I have the authority to since they are not part of the mainstream wiki and that I would be breaking local policy to do so. Companion List

Sorry if I wasn't clear before. I will attempt to fill in the blanks. Let me begin by saying that I understand that there is no definition of a companion. That said, I feel like we can create some form of guidelines to help us determine who is listed and who is not. (I refer to the table "Companions by Doctor" at the bottom of Companion.) This list would only apply to the TV companions, as prose and audio are a different beast and as I am not familiar enough with them to know if the following guidelines would work for them, I will simply say this applies only to TV characters unless someone else says it works for Prose and Audio as well.

For your consideration, I have adopted the following conditions and apply them to determine if I consider a character to be a "companion". They only need to meet ONE of the following:

• 1. Seen to encounter The Doctor on more than one occasion and traveled in the TARDIS.
• 2. Traveled in the TARDIS and died in their first story.
• 3. Invited to travel in the TARDIS with The Doctor, when he had no other companion.

I am aware that some of the admin prefer not to use "traveled in the TARDIS" as a condition and instead look to press notes and author's intent. As I see that as vague, I prefer not to do that.

Now, with the above conditions, I would rule the following on these 'controversial' characters:

• YES - Katarina - passes #2
• YES - Sara Kingdom - passes #2
• NO - Bret Vyon - fails all conditions
• YES - The Brig - passes #1
• YES - Sgt Benton - passes #1
• YES - Mike Yates - passes #1
• YES - Grace Holloway - passes #3
• NO - Chang Lee - fails all conditions
• YES - Jackie Tyler - passes #1
• NO - Madame de Pompadour - fails all conditions (Never traveled in the TARDIS. Was invited to, but while the Doctor already had companions with him)
• YES - Astrid Peth - passes #3
• NO - Jackson Lake - fails all conditions
• NO - Rosita Farisi - fails all conditions
• NO - Lady Christina de Souza - fails all conditions (in fact the Doctor flat out denies her.)
• NO - Cassie Rice - fails all conditions
• NO - Jimmy Stalkingwolf - fails all conditions
• YES - Adelaide Brooke - passes on #2 (yet Mia Bennett, Yuri Kerenski both fail, despite riding in the TARDIS once, they did not return for another episode and did not die in their first).
• YES - Wilfred Mott - passes #1
• NO - Craig Owens - fails all conditions (because he never rode in the TARDIS and was never invited to)
• YES - Canton Delaware - passes #1
• YES - Dorium Maldovar - passes #1
• YES - Kazran Sardick - passes #1 (because he is seen to encounter the Doctor at several points in his life)
• YES - Abigail Pettigrew - passes #2
• NO - Madge, Lily and Cyril Arwell - fails all conditions
• NO - Nefertiti - fails all conditions (was only SEEN to encounter The Doctor once, despite that reference is made to other encounters)
• NO - John Riddell - fails all conditions (was only SEEN to encounter The Doctor once, despite that reference is made to other encounters)
• YES - Vincent van Gogh - passes #1
• YES - Brian Williams - passes #1

I would recommend a GOR track for category:documentaries, to attract a bit more attention to the forgotten pages. Problem with CzechBot

Hello, I've got a question, I've recently found that some of the profile pictures on pages such as Barbara Wright and Liz Shaw are not flattering to the actress or to the character. Before I've tried to change them to more professional pictures, but later found them to be undone and reverted to the old unflattering pictures. I think that I should be allowed to change them since this is a free wiki where anyone can edit. I edit only when seen fit and in these cases, they are.

Happy holidays!

As this fiftieth anniversary year comes to a close, we here at Tardis just want to thank you for being a part of our community — even if you haven't edited here in a while. If you have edited with us this year, then thanks for all your hard work.

This year has seen an impressive amount of growth. We've added about 11,000 pages this year, which is frankly incredible for a wiki this big. November was predictably one of the busiest months we've ever had: over 500 unique editors pitched in. It was the highest number of editors in wiki history for a year in which only one programme in the DWU was active. And our viewing stats have been through the roof. We've averaged well over 2 million page views each week for the last two months, with some weeks seeing over 4 million views!

We've received an unprecedented level of support from Wikia Staff, resulting in all sorts of new goodies and productive new relationships. And we've recently decided to lift almost every block we've ever made so as to allow most everyone a second chance to be part of our community.

2014 promises to build on this year's foundations, especially since we've got a full, unbroken series coming up — something that hasn't happened since 2011. We hope you'll stick with us — or return to the Tardis — so that you can be a part of the fun!
