Homophobia

Homo- or lesbophobia was the fear — or irrational hatred — of homosexuality. This could manifest in name-calling — gay, queer, p*of, f*ggot — (TV: Children of Earth: Day Four, PROSE: Endgame, Death and Diplomacy, Timeless, Blue Box, et al) or even in murder. (PROSE: The Scales of Injustice) Rose Tyler said to the Ninth Doctor 'You're so gay', as an insult after he complained that being slapped had hurt. (TV: Aliens of London) Bernice Summerfield — from the 26th century, when bisexuality was the norm — researched the subject in the course of her historical studies, but could not understand how people could have made such a big deal of such things as sexual orientation. (PROSE: Sky Pirates!) In the 1990s, one version of Sam Jones identified as the only person in her high school class that didn't think homosexuals "ought to be shot on sight". (PROSE: Alien Bodies) The Doctor in his first incarnation said to Oliver Harper, who was nearly arrested in 1966 for his sexuality, "I shall say it's society's crime, not yours." (AUDIO: The Cold Equations)

Common gay male stereotypes included being effeminate, (PROSE: Endgame, Combat Rock) and the use of make-up and earrings. (PROSE: Interference - Book One) For lesbians, a common stereotype was short hair, (PROSE: Revolution Man) and dressing in men's clothing was another. (PROSE: All-Consuming Fire) Bob Campbell linked homosexuality with illegal drugs, and referred to gays' lifestyles as impermissible. (PROSE: The Devil Goblins from Neptune)

Homophobia led to gays being sent to concentration camps during World War II by the Nazis. (PROSE: Timewyrm: Exodus) In 1938, a newly-regenerated River Song purposely provoked a German Nazi soldier by flippantly telling him she was on her way to a gay gypsy Bar Mitzvah for the disabled. (TV: Let's Kill Hitler)

Angelo Colasanto was not allowed to join the Three Families because of his homosexual relationship with Jack Harkness, (TV: End of the Road) and Canton Delaware was kicked out of the FBI for wanting to marry a black man. (TV: Day of the Moon)

Until and including the 1960s, homosexuality was a criminal offence, and companion Oliver Harper was in fact facing arrest by the Metropolitan Police Service for his homosexuality when he first met the First Doctor in 1966. (AUDIO: The Cold Equations)

Mark Barrington told Geoff Paynter off for sniggering at the mention of Jacqueline Maguire being a lesbian — "It's not the 1970s anymore." (PROSE: The King of Terror)

Alan Pangbourne called Francis Leemark homophobic for calling him a fairy for — in the words of Leemark — "swishing around your school dressed up in a woman's robe". (PROSE: Warchild)

In 2016, homophobic abuse was still present on Earth. While bullying, Chris Richards made homophobic remarks to Matteusz Andrzejewski, and even mockingly suggested that Charlie Smith would be unfaithful to Matteusz. (AUDIO: Now You Know...)

In the 21st century, Christian fundamentalists attempted to perpetrate the genocide of all homosexuals through a series of religious crusades. (PROSE: Placebo Effect)

Jeff Shrubb was accused of stirring up racism, sexism and homophobia. (PROSE: Tragedy Day)

Upon learning that the chain of events that eventually resulted in Miracle Day led back to Jack Harkness and Angelo Colasanto, Rex Matheson jokingly said "you telling me the whole world got screwed because two gay guys had a hissy fit?". Gwen Cooper told Rex to "get back in [his] cave" in response. (TV: End of the Road)

In the first parallel universe that Rose Tyler visited as she attempted to return to N-Space, the homophobic blamed the disappearance of Sol on gay marriage. (AUDIO: The Endless Night)
