David Warner (29 July 1941[1]-24 July 2022[2]) was a noted character actor who has performed in a number of Doctor Who related productions for the BBC and Big Finish.

Warner was best known to Doctor Who enthusiasts as the voice of the "Unbound Doctor", who began in the Doctor Who Unbound series, and was brought back in The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield.

His only screen acting appearance was as Professor Grisenko in the Doctor Who Series 7 episode, Cold War. Three years earlier, he had also played another professor in an Ice Warrior story, when he voiced Professor Boston Schooner in the New Eighth Doctor Adventure, Deimos.

Previously, in 2009, he played Lord Azlok for the BBC-produced animated Doctor Who serial, Dreamland, co-starring David Tennant.

Warner also narrated the audiobook release of the Twelfth Doctor novel Royal Blood, written by Una McCormack.

He was one of the actors considered for the part of Borusa in a television movie project that eventually became Doctor Who.[3] He was also considered for the roles of Valgard in Terminus (TCH 37), Commander Vorshak in Warriors of the Deep (TCH 38), Orcini in Revelation of the Daleks (TCH 41) and Merdeen in The Mysterious Planet (TCH 42). Pip and Jane Baker also suggested him for the role of the Seventh Doctor. (DCOM: The Last Chance Saloon)

Career highlights

Outside of Doctor Who, Warner was involved in many legendary film and TV productions, including Tron, James Cameron's Titanic, The Omen, Time Bandits, and Z-Cars, as well as various roles in the Star Trek and Batman franchises.

In 2005, Warner also appeared in The League of Gentlemen's Apocalyse, written by and starring Doctor Who writer/actor Mark Gatiss, who also wrote Cold War.

Personal Life

He was the partner of Bernice Summerfield actress Lisa Bowerman.[4]
