Other series 4 trailers

There were also other non-narrative clip based trailers advertising the fourth series.

Christmas special

On 1 December 2007, a 60 second BBC One Christmas Drama trailer began airing on television, it featured several clips from Doctor Who. It was later released online on the Doctor Who website,[1] and the music used was "Let Me Entertain You (from 'Gypsy')" by Sandra Church.

On 8 December, a 90 second trailer began being screened in Odeon cinemas, the music used was "The Doctor's Theme" & "End of the World" by Terry Devine-King.[2] After an exclusive cinema-only run the trailer was released online on the Doctor Who website and YouTube on 14 December.

Also on 8 December, a 10 second teaser began airing on BBC One, and was released online as part of the Adventure Calendar on the Doctor Who website and YouTube. A further three trailers began airing on BBC One, a 40 second one on 15 December,[3] a 20 second one on 16, and another 40 second one on 21; these too were released online on the Doctor Who website and YouTube. The last one marked the final use of the 2005 arrangement of the "Doctor Who theme" as the current theme.

Main series

A 90 second trailer began being screened in Cineworld, Empire & Odeon cinemas from 1 February 2008 as part of a deal with Carlton Screen Advertising,[4][5] it used graphic elements created for the Christmas Special trailers, and the music used was "All the Strange, Strange Creatures". It featured clips from Partners in Crime, The Fires of Pompeii, Planet of the Ood, The Sontaran Stratagem, The Poison Sky, The Unicorn and the Wasp, Midnight, and Turn Left. After an exclusive cinema-only run the trailer began airing on television from 22 March 2008.[6]

A 60 second mid-series trailer began airing from 24 May 2008, to make up for the Eurovision delay to episode 8. It used the Series 4 graphic elements, and the music was "Hellstorm" by Klaus Badelt.[7] It featured clips from Silence in the Library-The Stolen Earth.

2008-10 specials

The graphic elements created for the 2007 Christmas special and Series 4 trailers continued to be used for the 2008-10 specials.

On 24 July 2008, the first trailer for The Next Doctor was shown at the Doctor Who panel at San Diego Comic-Con, but it wasn't released online until 29 October, alongside an interview with David Tennant regarding his departure from the show, on the Doctor Who website and YouTube.[8][9] It was 40 seconds long, it featured the tagline Coming Christmas 2008 the return of the Cybermen, and the music used was "The Cybermen".

On 1 December 2008, a 60 second BBC One Christmas Drama trailer began airing on television, it featured several clips from Doctor Who. It was also released online on YouTube, and the music used was "Donna and Blitzen" by Badly Drawn Boy.

A second 40 second trailer began airing on BBC One from 15 December 2008, and was also released online as part of the Adventure Calendar on the Doctor Who website. Again the music used was "The Cybermen".

A 60 second trailer for Planet of the Dead began airing on BBC One from 31 March 2009, and the following day it was released online on the Doctor Who website.[10] A minor variation of the trailer was also shown on BBC HD at part of the BBC HD Preview, which was near identical expect for some shots in a different order.

On 26 July 2009, the first trailers for The Waters of Mars and The End of Time, Part One were shown at the Doctor Who panel at San Diego Comic-Con, with The Waters of Mars one being released online on the Doctor Who website the following day.[11] It was 65 seconds long, and the music used was "Turn Left" & "Corridors and Fire Escapes". On 4 November 2009, a second 60 second trailer began airing on BBC One,[12] and again the following day it was released online on the Doctor Who website.[13] A third 20 second trailer began airing on BBC One from 6 November 2009. It was a narrative trailer, and utilised clips applied with CCTV effects to mimic found footage.

On 15 November 2009, a 30 second narrative trailer for Dreamland began airing on BBC One. It was narrated by Stuart Milligan in character as Colonel Stark giving a situation report. The music used was "Ear of God" & "Seismic Syndrome" by Mel Wesson, Bruce Fowler, Steve Kofsky & Hans Zimmer.[14] It was later released online on the Doctor Who website.

On 3 December 2009, a 60 second BBC One Christmas Drama trailer began airing on television, it featured several clips from Doctor Who. It was also released online on YouTube, and the music used was "Let Your Love Grow Tall" by Passion Pit.

A 40 second trailer for The End of Time, Part One began airing on BBC One from 16 December 2009. It used the diegetic sound of the Master's "drumming" instead of music. Another 40 second trailer for Part Two began airing on BBC One from 25 December 2009. It was also released online on the Doctor Who website, and the music used was "The Doctor's Theme Series Four" & "Final Days".

The Online Version The New Adventures series of Doctor Who novels were an experiment by Virgin Books to continue the Doctor’s travels in print, following the TV show’s cancellation in 1989. Between 1992 and 1997, 61 New Adventures were published, pitting the Seventh Doctor - alongside Ace and new companion Bernice Summerfield - against such scary monsters as the Cybermen, the Sontarans and the Chelonians - giant tortoises with a penchant for flower arranging. In 1996, BBC Books decided that as part of its merchandising plans to accompany the anticipated rebirth of Doctor Who following the TV Movie, Virgin’s current publishing licence - coincidentally due to expire - would not be renewed. With the publication of The Eight Doctors in June 1997, a new era for the Doctor in print had begun, taking with it much of the writing talent that had developed over the previous five years. Meanwhile, copies of the now out-of-print New Adventures became sought after collectibles. Some could command as much as fifty times their cover price on online auction sites such as eBay. We're publishing The Well-Mannered War as a follow-up to the highly acclaimed The Dying Days and Human Nature, at a chapter a week, with a brand new commentary by author Gareth Roberts, and featuring all-new illustrations by Daryl Joyce. "The Well-Mannered War got rather lost at the end of the Virgin license, and I gather it's a gap in people's Dr Who collection," says Gareth. "Hopefully it's also a fun read, with plenty of twists, turns, and dollops of shattering insight into the human condition." "Gareth's Missing Adventure novels are fan favourites and it's clear to see why," adds Daryl. "The characters and the humour in The Well-Mannered War are spot on. "You can see Tom Baker's affronted double takes and feel the influence of Douglas Adams in the dialogue - this is Doctor Who 1979 style, and it's a hugely enjoyable read. "The retro illustrations couldn't be more different from the last ebook, but what better way to immerse yourself in period nostalgia than to have a pastiche of the Target novelisations, complete with those essential dramatic quotes?" Before you all ask, we will be presenting all of Daryl's illustrations as a gallery of desktop wallpapers once the whole book is online. We have also set up a E-books Message Board which will allow you to gossip about the story as it evolves. Gareth and Daryl will probably be popping in from time to time, so be sure to check it out. But that's enough explanation. It's now time to discover some dark doings in the Metra system...

Previously on the New Adventures MESSENGER: Rassilon, the dying Pythia cursed Gallifrey. There will be no more children. The world is barren and doomed! RASSILON: D’oh! SHADOWY MAN: Told you so. Now about the shortage of housing... CHRIS: Sorry, Roz. We shouldn’t have done that. But I love you. ROZ: Tough! I’m leading an attack on that GTO station on top of that hill. (RUNS OFF WAVING GUN)

THE DOCTOR: Chris, it’s Roz. CHRIS: Is she...? THE DOCTOR: She went up the hill into history. CHRIS: (BITES HIS KNUCKLES) I’m trying to cope.

DOROTHEE (née ACE): These days I live in 19th century Paris. But I’ve got this time-travelling motor bike, so I do all my shopping at Marks and Spencers.

CHRIS: The card says "To Leela. For your wedding." (THE DOCTOR SHAKES THE GIFT-WRAPPED BOX. IT RATTLES OMINOUSLY) THE DOCTOR: It was for her underwear drawer. I must pop it in to Gallifrey sometime. CHRIS: It's past its sell-by date. THE DOCTOR: Gallifrey or the lingerie? (SLAPS POCKETS) Bother! I don't have a receipt for either of them.

GOLD USHER: Do you swear by the Rod of Rassilon to uphold the holy office of President of the High Council of Gallifrey? ROMANA: Hang on. (ADJUSTS MATRIX AT JAUNTY ANGLE) I swear. (TIME LORDS LOOK SUITABLY UNCOMFORTABLE.)

THE DOCTOR: Chris, I have a presentiment of doom. I can’t see beyond my seventh self. Eighth Man Bound. CHRIS: I’m still trying to cope.
