Season 9 of Doctor Who ran from 1 January 1972 to 24 June 1972. It starred Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor and Katy Manning as Jo Grant. The season opened with Day of the Daleks and concluded with The Time Monster.

Overview[[edit] | [edit source]]

It consisted of five serials comprised of twenty-six episodes. Day of the Daleks re-introduced the Daleks to the series after a half-decade absence.

This was the first series of Doctor Who to launch on New Year's Day. This wouldn't happen again until the launch of Series 12 in 2020.

It was noted for being the beginning of the end of the Doctor's exile on Earth, with the Doctor's TARDIS still under the control of the Time Lords (The Mutants) and restricted freedom (The Curse of Peladon and The Time Monster), as well as UNIT and the Master appearing less frequently in compared to the previous two series.

As well as the return of the Daleks and the Ice Warriors, this series also introduced Alpha Centauri, Aggedor and the Silurians' aquatic cousins the Sea Devils.

The Time Monster introduced a new interior for the TARDIS. It was never used again and was redesigned the following series.

Notably, this was the only season of the Third Doctor era to not have a story written by Robert Holmes.
