The Time Beetle, (TV: Turn Left (TV story), etc.) or by one account, the Trickster Beetle, (PROSE: ) was an insectoid creature resembling a giant Lucanus cervus that was capable of manipulating time. According to the Tenth Doctor, it was "one of the Trickster's Brigade". With the help of something to let it inside its victim's mind, such as a board game or fortune teller, it was attached to unsuspecting victims, after which it changed a key event in their lives. In most cases, this would have little impact; the victim's life would change and the universe would compensate. For important people, like Donna Noble, whole new parallel worlds could be created.

In a parallel world created by the Beetle, it existed in a state of flux, and could not be touched. Though it was invisible to humans, some sensitive individuals were able to see it, particularly as major timeline changes were coming to pass.

The Time Beetle was an insectoid creature capable of manipulating time. It was used by, or was part of, the Trickster's Brigade. With the help of humans within the brigade, or at least a Fortune Teller, it was attached to unsuspecting victims after which it changed a key event in their lives.
One account identified the Time Beetle as a member of the Pantheon of Discord, (PROSE: ) which the Eleventh Doctor later corroborated. It existed in a state of flux which meant that it could not be touched. It was also invisible to humans, except to some extra sensitive ones where the difference between the normal and new timeline was unusually great. It was also visible in the Circle of Mirrors but that may have been due to the time technology that was present.
In contrast to most accounts depicting the Beetle as a singular entity, (PROSE: , etc.) one account suggested that there may have existed any number of plural "time beetles". (PROSE: Starting Out (feature))

The Time Beetle attached itself to Donna Noble and in turn created a parallel world around her in which she never met the Doctor. It released itself and died from the tremendous force. (DW: Turn Left)
The Beetle specifically fed off the time differential (PROSE: ) or the time energy created by disruptions in an individual's timeline; (PROSE: ) indeed, Rose Tyler knew that the Beetle "[fed] off time, by changing time."
