For some crime, Terne was imprisoned in the Boulevard of Alternate Brutalities where he lived through a repeated fourteen-minute time loop. When the Boulevard began to decay the time loop contracted meaning that he spent several hundred years reliving his parents' desertion, his sibling's death and his own hanging (at which point he was originally recruited by Faction Paradox.
