(How do you know the 20th was also popular with pizzas?)
(While those sources don't indicate that, such information feels like it is in *a* source. There has gotta be a source, in the sixty years of Who, that has shown pizza to be popular in the 20th century)

Pizza was a type of food found on Earth. Pizza consisted of a bread crust, usually a layer of tomato sauce (but other sauces such as barbecue could be used), a layer of cheese and various toppings. In the 20th[source needed] and 21st centuries, pizza was a popular choice for a meal. (TV: The Parting of the Ways, Love & Monsters) Pizza could be ordered for delivery from certain restaurants such as Jubilee Pizza, which was favoured by Torchwood Three in Cardiff. (TV: Everything Changes) Standard toppings had names, for instance, Hawaiian pizza was with pineapple. (PROSE: Joyride) Pizza parlours were restaurants that primarily served pizza. (PROSE: Gatecrashers)

History

Around 70 AD, the Romans ate a precursor to pizza which did not include tomatoes. The Tenth Doctor compared it to a "herby cheese on toast" and a "cheesy naan". He identified an ancient pizza slice at an archaeological dig site in Crediton Vale. (PROSE: I Am A Dalek)

According to Peter Summerfield, pizza "started" around the 18th century. His father, Adrian Wall, liked pizza, specifically Hawaiian pizza. (PROSE: Big Bang Generation)

Tom took Iris Wildthyme to a pizza parlour for dinner, but Iris left with Robin Hood before she could eat any. (AUDIO: Wildthyme at Large)

On 5 March 2005, Rose Tyler suggested to "Mickey Smith", actually an Auton duplicate, that they could eat pizza that night, which the Auton Mickey enthusiastically agreed with. Though they arrived at a restaurant, the Auton was intercepted by the Ninth Doctor before they could order. (TV: Rose)

A new pizza place offering deliveries opened on Minto Road in late 2006. Mickey Smith told Jackie Tyler about it. (TV: The Parting of the Ways)

In 2007, Elton Pope went out to get a pizza for him and Jackie Tyler. However, he was ultimately left alone with the pizza after Jackie angrily set him away after finding a photograph of her daughter in his coat, having intended to leave a tenner in his pocket in return for the pizza. (TV: Love & Monsters)

Pizza was Caroline's favourite food, and suggested that she and Clive Finch go and eat pizza together. When he left her universe, she teased him about not being able to enjoy pizza. (AUDIO: The Flood)

In the 2000s,[nb 1] the Tenth Doctor accidentally called a pizza place, Pizza Geronimo, while attempting to phone UNIT upon being stranded on San Helios. (TV: Planet of the Dead)

Sometime in the late 2000s, Iris Wildthyme ordered anchovy pizza at a restaurant, although she got Tom to pick off the anchovies. (AUDIO: Wildthyme at Large)

In 2010, a Groske working at UNIT Base 5 had pizza stored in his den, which he offered to share with Clyde Langer, Rani Chandra, and Santiago Jones as they hid from the Shansheeth. (TV: Death of the Doctor)

In 2011, Sarah Jane Smith offered Sky pizza. (TV: Sky)

By the 26th century, pizza had apparently become less common and Bernice Summerfield had never had it. (PROSE: The Left-Handed Hummingbird)

Pizza was also found on another planet populated by Gornt. The teleportation system in New Port City meant that one pizza parlour had Pizza-Porter ovens that teleported pizza directly to customers' homes. (PROSE: Gatecrashers)

Other references

Witnessing the state of the Decayed Master after encountering the Warp Core, Ace commented that he had a "face like a dropped pizza". (AUDIO: Dust Breeding)

Footnotes

  1. Both Planet of the Dead and The End of Time are referred to in dialogue as taking place after the end of Journey's End, which is set in either 2008, according to TV: The Fires of Pompeii, TV: The Waters of Mars, and AUDIO: SOS, or six weeks after the middle of May 2009, circa June, according to PROSE: Beautiful Chaos. However, the year of Planet of the Dead is unspecified, as is whether or not it is intended to be the Easter immediately after Journey's End.
