John Francis Vater was an Anglican Marine who was killed by the Villengard Corporation's machine algorithm on Kastarion 3.

Biography

John Francis Vater was born circa 5045 as the child of Agnes and Millicent Vater. He had a daughter, Splice Alison Vater. He was ordained as an Anglican. At some point, John was deployed with the Anglican Marines to the planet Kastarion 3, to fight a war against what he believed were the Kastarions. He received special permission to bring his daughter.

He was a member of the Marine Patrol B. On 5 October 5087, he and his Anglican comrade Carson were the only two survivors following a Grade 1 encounter. During this, John sustained an injury that rendered him temporarily blind. As he returned to base, he talked to his daughter via their comm implants. He instructed her to brush her teeth and to find Mundy Flynn to put her to bed in his absence. After Carson accidentally stepped on a Villengard smartmine, a combat-activated Villengard Automated Ambulance Unit arrived to the scene and began scanning John. The algorithm considered him a patient, and upon recognising John's blindness, the ambulance unit determined a recovery time of four weeks. This was deemed unacceptable to the algorithm for combat, which decided to mercy kill John.

John's remains were compressed into a rod, during which his scream alerted the Fifteenth Doctor in his TARDIS nearby. The ambulance unit created an artificial intelligence reconstruction of John, and informed his next of kin, his daughter Splice, by sending out a geo-stamp. (TV: Boom [+]Loading...["Boom (TV story)"])
