Mutants were a group which existed in various universes.

History

The Doctor's universe

In the Doctor's universe, the Rani injected humans with a "super gene" which caused them to exhibit "Alien and Psychic Traits", including advanced psychic powers, super strength, flight, and the ability to shoot laser beams from their eyes, with different people using these "gifts" for "good" or for "evil". She did this in order to see how it would effect their physiology, psychology, and sociology, observing that they displayed increased aggression, as well as causing a destabilising effect on human society due to their frequent battles. The Rani disguised herself as a genetic scientist for the UN science counsel, allowing her to experiment, under the guise of "checking for mutant genes".

A battle once occurred between the groups in New York, during which a group materialised. The group observed that more mutants appeared wherever the Rani went, and needed the "good" mutants's aid to end her scheme. (GAME: The 'X' Factor [+]Loading...["The 'X' Factor (game)"])

Earth-92131

In Earth-92131, mutants were sometimes seen as "monsters".

Behind the scenes

Mutants (Homo superior) originate from the Marvel Multiverse. The mutants featured in The 'X' Factor [+]Loading...["The 'X' Factor (game)"] are implicitly those from Marvel Comics, although this is not made explicit.
