The Stone Daleks were a pair of progenitor Daleks, left as an "after image" when Dalek history was temporarily erased when the universe was destroyed on 26th June 2010.

Biography

The stone Daleks were two of the progenitor Daleks present at the Alliance's sealing of the Eleventh Doctor in the Pandorica in 102. As the cracks in time continued to run rampant across the universe, Dalek history was erased, leaving the stone Daleks as "after images."

The Pandorica held atoms from the original universe, taken before the cracks started to erase events. It could sustain life. Light from within the Pandorica restored one of the Daleks, albeit with limited power. This stone Dalek shot the Doctor, managing to severely wound the Time Lord, but depleting its energy reserves. It was confronted by River Song, who threatened to kill it by shooting its eyestalk with an Alpha Meson gun. Initially, it did not believe that River would destroy it, based on the fact that she was one of the Doctor's companions and would show mercy. River told it to look her up in its data banks, after that it asked for mercy, a request she made it repeat. Later, when rejoining Amy and Rory who asked where it was, she merely stated "It died."

When the Doctor reset the universe and timeline, the stone Daleks, along with all things that had been erased from history, were restored to their original form and place in space and time. (DW: The Big Bang)

Behind the scenes

  • The reactivated Dalek was the first to actually be heard crying "Mercy". The lone Dalek in Dalek cried for the Ninth Doctor to "have pity."
  • It is unknown which Dalek of those present under Stonehenge the restored Dalek actually was. The lack of a deep voice suggests that it was not the Supreme. However, its voice is similar to those of the red Drone Daleks in City of the Daleks and Nicholas Briggs has stated that the voice used in the Adventure Games is the voice he would use if he ever had to voice the red Daleks on TV.[source needed]
  • Three stone Daleks and two stone Cybermen were supposed to have been seen in The Big Bang. However, due to the costume necessities for The Pandorica Opens, the budget did not support it. Most of a stone Cyberman was seen when the Doctor escaped the Pandorica. However, a stone Auton Roman appeared.[source needed]
  • The stone Dalek which activates in The Big Bang was an altered model of the Strategist Dalek. This was confirmed by an operator in a Doctor Who Magazine interview.
  • When the stone Dalek moved itself and its eyestalk, it made the same sound as the Russell T. Davies era Daleks did when they moved.[source needed]
