James Bond was a fictional British secret agent created on Earth in the mid-20th century. Sean Connery and Roger Moore, who had previously played another fictional secret agent in the television series The Saint, were among the actors who played the role in the film series. (AUDIO: Thin Ice)

Rory Williams was the apparent inspiration for the character, after he and the Eleventh Doctor rescued Bond's creator, Ian Fleming, during the London Blitz. (COMIC: The Doctor and the Nurse)

In the novelisation Doctor Who and the Tenth Planet, Ben Jackson is viewing an unnamed James Bond film starring Roger Moore. In the original serial The Tenth Planet, he viewed an unidentified western film; at the time the serial was broadcast, Moore had not yet been cast as Bond, but he had made several films as 007 by the time the novelisation was written. The book mentions a battle with kung-fu students which, appeared in the 1974 film The Man With The Golden Gun.

Off-screen connections

Significant connections

  • Doctor Who as a television series and the James Bond film franchises (which had begun originally as a book series) share common ground in terms of longevity, with both being revived successfully after lengthy hiatuses.
  • Timothy Dalton, who played Rassilon in TV: The End of Time played Bond. To date, no other actor to have played Bond in the film series has appeared on both Doctor Who or its spin-offs and as Bond. However, Michael Jayston played the character in a radio adaptation of You Only Live Twice in 1971 and was at one point considered for the role on film. Given that the Valeyard is an evil version of the Doctor from a possible future, Jayston is the only actor to play both James Bond and the Doctor to date. As listed below, numerous other actors have appeared in both franchises.
