The Xbox 360 and Xbox One versions were developed by 4J Studios and published by Microsoft, and the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita versions were developed by 4J and published by Sony Computer Entertainment.

The game was publicly released on PC in 2011, Xbox 360 in 2012, PlayStation 3 in 2013, and Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita in 2014. Mojang was purchased by Microsoft in 2014.

On 3 October 2014, a selection of Doctor Who "skins" were released for the game on Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The pack cost $2.99/€2.85/£1.99.[1] These skins were later released on the PS4, PS3 and PS Vita versions of the game on 23 September 2015.[2]
