Perdita

Perdita was a character in William Shakespeare's play The Winter's Tale. (PROSE: Exit, by Another Means) Her parents were Leontes and Hermione. (PROSE: The Winter's Tale)

Perdita was a baby in Act III Scene III, during which Antigonus left her to fend for herself. In the published version of the The Winter's Tale from 1623, this action precipitated Antigonus's departure from the play with the stage direction "Exit, pursued by a bear" while an alternative draft saw him leave by entering his blue box which then vanished. (PROSE: Exit, by Another Means)

In Act V Scene III, Perdita accompanied Leontes to the chapel at Paulina's house in order to see a statue of the dead Hermione. During the scene, it was revealed that the statue was actually Hermione herself who was not dead at all. (PROSE: The Winter's Tale)
