Richard II was a play by William Shakespeare featuring the eponymous King of England.

Ruler of New Britain Mariah Learman quoted from the play during a broadcast in which she announced her decision to defer the elections, describing its sentiment as being "said in words far more appropriate than I ever could".

"This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle, this earth of majesty, [...] this fortress built by nature for herself against infection and the hand of war, this happy breed of men, [...] this blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England!"Mariah Learman, quoting Richard II [src]

Viola considered the choice of Richard II as a point of reference ironic. Major Ferdinand questioned if this was because most people had already forgotten Shakespeare but a young Shakespeare, who had been taken out of time for his own protection, clarified it was because the play was about a ruler who is deposed. Viola cautioned the young Shakespeare that he should not know such information and to keep it to himself even if he did.
