Madam Ikalla was minor vampire royalty in the Dark Times. Following the Kotturuh crisis, she received the energies of the Gates of Death from Inyit when she passed, turning Ikalla into the "Last of the Kotturuh, but changed".

Biography

Ikalla was aboard the Coffin Ship that the Ninth Doctor helped liberate from the Great Vampires. During the Battle of Mordeela, she commanded the Vampire forces. (PROSE: All Flesh is Grass)

The Doctor and Ikalla then too a trip to the planet Parvanna, one of the coldest and lest hospitable planets in the Dark Times. There, they soon found themselves hunted by an invisible creature, which the Doctor realised was uninterested in a hot-blooded creature like him, having evolved on such a cold planet — hence focusing its attention on Ikalla. She was undaunted and tried to stare down the being, proclaiming that as vampire royalty, "being hunted by [it] was an insult", but the unintelligent creature did not respond and continued attacking. The Doctor pulled out a sonic stake, initially prompting Ikalla to think that he was an ordinary Time Lord after all and had taken her to this remote planet to kill her, but the Doctor proved otherwise by using the sonic stake to create a fire with which to frighten off the creature. Once safe, they awaited the return of their ship. (COMIC: Tales of the Dark Times (part 4) [+]Loading...{"part":"4","1":"Tales of the Dark Times (comic story)"})

Ikalla escaped the Coffin Ship when it was attacked by the Dalek Time Squad, but was captured by the Death Brokers and brought to Entranxis. They showed her to the Tenth Doctor when he came to the Brokers asking for weapons and the Eighth and Ninth Doctors arrived, having been tracking their tenth incarnation. The Daleks attacked Entranxis to capture her, seeking a Vampire for their biological experiments, and she escaped with the Ninth Doctor. She accompanied him when he went in search of the Kotturuh to try to help them, eventually meeting Inyit on Birinji. The Doctor left her to look after Inyit whilst he went with his other selves to defend Gallifrey from the Time Squad. Ikalla witnessed Inyit's final judgement on the Dalek Symbiont and Inyit transferred some of her energies into Ikalla.

When the Free Undead settled on Birinji, Ikalla became their scion, transferring her altered biology to them and therefore freeing them from their "cravings". She decided to reform them into a civilisation of gardeners, much to the Doctor's amusement. (PROSE: All Flesh is Grass [+]Loading...["All Flesh is Grass (novel)"])

Personality

Ikalla had the arrogance befitting "minor vampire royalty", but, under that exterior, concealed a degree of melancholy about the place of vampires in the universe. She once mentioned that she "often hunt[ed]" when she felt "lonely". (COMIC: Tales of the Dark Times (part 4) [+]Loading...{"part":"4","1":"Tales of the Dark Times (comic story)"})

(COMIC: Tales of the Dark Times [+]Loading...["Tales of the Dark Times (comic story)"]; GAME: Worlds Apart [+]Loading...["Worlds Apart (video game)"]) On Parvanna, she wore a simple, purple dress tied with a darker belt around the waist. (COMIC: Tales of the Dark Times [+]Loading...["Tales of the Dark Times (comic story)"]) Upon her initial arrival on Berenji, she wore a white dress which went down to her feet but left her forearms bare, and was complemented with a short cape of the same hue and material. As leader of the gardening Free Undead, she adopted a somewhat more revealing style of clothing, consisting exclusively of a black dress made of a sheer, translucent material, with no shoes nor underwear top.
