The Doctor (Pericles)
The Doctor was a character in an alternative version of William Shakespeare's play Pericles.
He was clearly based upon the Fourth Doctor, with the character's presence part of the reason for the alternative draft's inclusion in the Shakespeare Notebooks. He was a companion of Romana and together they "travel[led] on time's seas" in search of "a precious jewel". In the play, they came to Mytilene "by mischance".
At some point, the Doctor was imprisoned, encountering the governor of Mytilene Lord Lysimachus during this debacle. In Scene VI, Romana met Lysimachus and asked him if he held "a Doctor" in the prisons. He initially believed she was in need of medical help but recognised to whom she referred after she labelled him "a wand'ring fool". Romana told Lysimachus to "fetch the Doctor" and then come back to the house of ill-repute where she was staying which, after some more convincing, he eventually agreed to do.
