Santa Claus
Santa Claus — also known as Father Christmas or, according to the Eleventh Doctor, Jeff (TV: A Christmas Carol) — legendarily distributed presents to good children on Christmas morning under their trees. He played an important part in the Christmas tradition on the planet Earth.
Profile
Santa maintained a workshop where he created toys. It used to be located at the North Pole, but due to the aeroplanes which began flying over it in the 20th century it became very noisy, so he moved it to an unnamed planet. Following the Twelfth Doctor's parting with Clara Oswald, Santa Claus entered the Doctor's TARDIS. He told the Doctor that Clara was not happy with their separation and asked him what he wanted for Christmas. (TV: Death in Heaven)
Father Christmas and his elves, as well as his flying reindeers, turn out to be illusions created by the subconscious minds of the Doctor, Clara, and four other people who have been attacked and are being fed on by Dream Crabs; creatures who enduce a dream state to numb out the pain of their victims while they eat their brains. The Doctor had been attacked whilst on an unknown world and his memories led the Dream Crabs to Clara. Father Christmas represents their subconscious minds trying to break free of the dream state which they eventually succeed and he makes them wake up by helping them flee from their nightmare in his sleigh. Behind the Scenes
- Santa Claus and Father Christmas have different origins and are technically different individuals. However, the character portrayed by Nick Frost in TV: Death in Heaven is identified in the closing credits as Santa Claus, although UK media tended to refer to him as Father Christmas both in reviewing the episode, and in pre-broadcast coverage of the 2014 Christmas special.
- In An Adventure in Space and Time, Verity Lambert (Jessica Raine) describes the Doctor as "C.S. Lewis meets Father Christmas".
