Flame gun
Flame guns were a type of flamethrower used by the Mechanoids and the Daleks.
Mechanoids
Flame guns were weapons used by the Mechanoids, capable of destroying Daleks. (TV: The Chase, PROSE: Birth of a Legend)
Daleks
Daleks of the New Dalek Paradigm used flame guns as alternateive manipulator arms, resembling their eyestalks. The red Drone Daleks used flame guns to melt through ice when searching for "the Abomination". (COMIC: The Only Good Dalek)
Variants
The pyro-flame was used by earlier silver Daleks. These were small cylindrical pieces at the end of the arm which shot a stream of fire to clear swaths of forest. (TV: The Daleks' Master Plan)
Bronze Daleks in the First World War used flamethrowers to clear forests to pursue the Eleventh Doctor and his companions, the flames coming out of their suction cups. (COMIC: The Dalek Project)
Behind the scenes
- The flamethrowers originally used by the Mechanoids in The Chase are named "flame guns" in Birth of a Legend. The name was also used for the flamethrowers used by the Daleks in The Only Good Dalek.
- The Daleks in Dr. Who and the Daleks (the 1965 Peter Cushing feature film) were originally supposed to have flamethrowers as their main weapons, replacing the futuristic gunsticks of their televised counterparts. This was eventually replaced with gas weapons, but a flame-spouting gunstick is still prominently visible on the Black Dalek in one of the early posters for the film.
