Game between the Toymaker and the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors
A third game between the Toymaker and the Doctor was played following the Trilogic Game which was won by the First Doctor and the second game which the Fourteenth Doctor lost. (TV: The Giggle [+]Loading...["The Giggle (TV story)"])
History
Following their first game in the Toymaker's realm, (TV: The Celestial Toymaker [+]Loading...["The Celestial Toymaker"]) and their second game in Soho, 1925, the Fourteenth Doctor decreed they had to face for a third and final time to determine the true winner. The Toymaker declared it would occur in 2023.
Atop of UNIT Headquarters in London, the pair encountered each other again. The Doctor initially offered the Toymaker an alliance rather than a third game, a chance to play infinite games across the universe. However, having acquired the Galvanic beam, the Toymaker refused, instead tormenting the Doctor's friends, namely Donna Noble, Melanie Bush, Kate Stewart and Shirley Anne Bingham. Distressed, the Doctor insisted the Toymaker owed him that final game. In response, the Toymaker shot the Doctor with the Galvanic beam, declaring the Doctor had implicitly established another rule: given he had regenerated from his first incarnation to his fourteenth incarnation between their first and second games, that meant the Toymaker was allowed to have the next Doctor as his opponent for the third game. However, instead of changing appearance, the Fourteenth Doctor bi-generated, summoning the Fifteenth Doctor to 2023. The two Doctors together challenged the Toymaker to a game.
Perplexed, the Toymaker insisted they were cheating, but the Doctors established the Toymaker forced the Fourteenth Doctor to bi-generate, which did summon the Fifteenth Doctor as the opponent he desired. Therefore, this was the Toymaker's own rule in play. Unable to counter their point, the Toymaker accepted the challenge.
The two Doctors stated they would play the first game ever created by the human race and named "the ball: catch" as the game of choice. The Toymaker conjured a juggling ball, establishing they would play, with the first to fail to catch the ball and drop it would be the loser. He tossed the ball at the Fourteenth Doctor, striking him in the chest, knocking him to the floor. However, the Doctor revealed he caught it while falling. He stood up, complimenting the Toymaker's throw, then tossed it to the Fifteenth Doctor. The game was underway.
After several throws between the three players, the two Doctors eventually managed to ally together to launch a throw so hard and fast that the Toymaker failed to catch it. Having lost the ball, the Toymaker tried to protest but the two Doctors declared they had won in a fair game. Despite his pleas, the Fourteenth Doctor declared his prize: to banish the Toymaker from existence. The entity contorted, muttering how his defeat was not fair and that his legions would come for them. By his own elemental powers, he was sealed in his own toybox. Kate ensured it was taken away to be bonded in salt.
Some time later, the Fifteenth Doctor eventually claimed his prize: he used the Toymaker's powers to whack the Fourteenth Doctor's TARDIS, causing it to summon the Fifteenth Doctor's TARDIS from the future. Therefore, this sustained the paradox of the Doctor's bi-generation, enabling the Fourteenth Doctor to remember the encounter and retire on Earth with Donna to rehabilitate while the Fifteenth Doctor could carry on adventuring, functioning in a concurrent timeline. Rules
Before the game, the Toymaker and the two Doctors established the game's rules:
- The Toymaker was permitted to have the Fifteenth Doctor be an opponent in this game, having decreed the Doctor had always been in a new incarnation when they faced previously. However, this also meant the Fourteenth Doctor could still partake in the game if he was still present after the Fifteenth Doctor's arrival.
- The three would play a game of catch using one of the Toymaker's juggling balls.
- The first person to drop the ball or fail to catch it would lose the game.
- As this game would break the one-all deadlock, the winner of the game would be granted one wish. In the Doctor's case, this applied as two separate wishes: one for the Fourteenth Doctor, the other for the Fifteenth Doctor.
- The Toymaker's realm would linger in play for sometime after the game, meaning the victors could still declare their prize some length of time after the game's conclusion.
There was one implicit, but surmised, official rule that was debated just before the game began. Initially, the Toymaker challenged the two Doctor's ability to both play the game against him at the same time, citing it as cheating. However, the two Doctors established their simultaneous existence was his own making. Therefore, much like how he established the implicit rule that the Doctor he faced must be a successive incarnation, the two Doctors established that a prior incarnation could still partake in the game with said successive incarnation.
