Doctor Who Online Adventures (fan work)
- You may be looking for Dapol action figures.
The Doctor Who Online Adventures, originally known as Dapol Doctor Who, and occasionally abbreviated to DWOA, were a series of fan-made figure-animation webcasts created between 2005 and 28 January 2017 by Planetary Productions and later Word of Mouth Productions, spanning seven seasons. The series drew its original name from mostly using authentic Dapol action figures to depict the characters, although other sources were occasionally employed, and most sets were custom-made.
While the series was originally wholly unauthorised, Series 5, 6 and 7 were produced under a formal, but non-commercial "creative media license" from the BBC. Sophie Aldred additionally reprised her role as Ace in the first story of Series 7, a Christmas special entitled Family — this even though the character was voiced by a different actress in episodes before and after the special. The series' creator Brendan Sheppard had previously contributed a number of documentaries to Doctor Who DVD releases.
History
The seed for what would become the Doctor Who Online Adventures was first developed by Brendan Sheppard in 1994 as Dapol Doctor Who, with the first story being entitled The Mellicous Mission. In 1995, he formed Planetary Productions with his friend Glen Kilpatrick and created three more episodes; they reused the titles of The Keeper of Traken, Warrior's Gate and Full Circle so as to be able to recycle the title sequences of those stories, despite having unrelated plots. One more story in this prototypal era was created in 1997. However, none of these episodes were ever released to the public.[1]
The first full serial to be released on YouTube was produced in 2006: The Prisoners of Arriton. A "few months" after its release, Sheppard, surprised by its success, took down its original upload and created a dapoldoctorwho YouTube channel, formally announcing new episodes. The next serial, announced as The Tombs of Ice, was produced in late 2008. Over the course of the next year, [2] with Sheppard having now planned out a full series, he followed it up with a third serial, Rise of the Sea Devils. Sheppard, now joined with M. Justin Parsons and beginning to approach other writers for further adventures, then produced The Secret Warrior and Siege of the Cybermen. Finally, this first full season was topped off with its first finale, The Time Assassin, which also saw Rex Duis first joining the cast.[1] On 19 March 2010, Sheppard was interviewed about the series on Infinite Hollywood; by then, the whole of the first season had been released, and Sheppard was teasing the upcoming release of Series 2.[2]
Sheppard would subsequently be interviewed by Heart FM and BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. During the release of Series 3, the fan website Doctor Who Online approached Planetary Productions to host the series on their site; this led to the name change from Dapol Doctor Who to the Doctor Who Online Adventures, which lasted even after the partnership ended (with only one season, Series 5, being produced in full while the partnership was live). It was during this same Series 5 that CGI artist Chris Clark joined the team, remaining with them after the split.[1]
On or slightly before 29 June 2013, during the release of Series 5, the team behind the series announced on Twitter and Facebook that they had been "endorsed" by the BBC in an official fashion,[3][4] in the form of a non-commercial "creative media license", or "creative license",[5] — with the contract reportedly coming into effect a "few days" before 1 July 2014. According to DWOA team member Billy Garratt-John as quoted on a contemporary Tardis thread, the contract did not retroactively cover the earlier seasons, but "from here on out it will be licensed", ostensibly including the back half of the then-ongoing Series 5; Garratt-John reportedly claimed that Heart of Steel, the then-recently-released second serial of Series 5, would be the first to be covered by the agreement.[6]
In December 2013, with Series 6 in production, a standalone Doctor Who Online Adventures website was launched, as well as a revamped YouTube channel on which all past seasons were rehosted, with the website going up on 22 December and the reuploaded videos on 24 December.[1][7] On 20 February 2014, Sheppard released the first four installments of a series of behind-the-scenes features looking back on the series and answering fan questions.[8] Series 6 started releasing on 23 May 2014 with the first part of Possession.[9] On 24 December 2014, the News Page of the website was updated to announce that Series 7 would no longer be produced by Planetary Productions but by Word of Mouth Productions, with whom Sheppard produced several Doctor Who charity audio dramas and into whom Planetary Productions had now merged. The first episode of Series 7, the Christmas special Family, was released on that same day, and featured Sophie Aldred, who had previously worked with Word of Mouth Productions, reprising the role of Ace.[10]
No new episodes were released in 2015; on 4 June 2016, a trailer for the full Series 7 was finally released[11], a week before the release of the first episode after Family, Call of the Vocantem, heralding the beginning of this final season.[12] On 28 January 2017, alongside the final installment of the last serial of Series 7, the DWOA YouTube channel released a video entitled Write for Series 8. It announced that M. Justin Parsons was stepping down as script editor for the series, and that Series 8 would abandon the stop-motion format, instead pivoting to audio dramas — a change which was attributed in the video to "a new license agreement that we have". It was planned to comprise six two-part stories, and would have featured a mysterious male thief character appearing throughout the season. As its name implied, the video served as an open call for pitches, with a deadline of 20 February 2017; writers were permitted to use any Doctor and companion, rather than the series-typical Seventh Doctor and Ace.[13] Ultimately, however, no such series materialised.
