Publisher's summary

Surgeon Lieutenant Harry Sullivan is supposed to be on holiday. But his arrival in Calcutta is intercepted by someone from the local branch of UNIT - a staff member called Naomi Cross.

A businessman in the area has mysteriously cancelled the opening of his new hotel...and local villagers have reported sightings of 'devils' in the swamps. Devils that look very familiar from the UNIT files...

The businessman requires medical aid so UNIT have decided to send him a doctor. Unfortunately, when Harry and Naomi arrive on site they find a different Doctor has got there ahead of them...And that's just the start of their troubles.

Plot

Part one

Harry lands in Calcutta for a holiday and is met at the airport by Naomi, who gives security a letter from UNIT when he is unable to produce his passport and takes him to headquarters. There, Captain Sharma tells him about Ramesh Kamal, a wealthy man residing with his wife, Amita, in an unopened hotel in the swamps near which a Sea Devil has been spotted by a villager. As UNIT's medics are busy on the Nepalese border, Harry agrees to go to the hotel with Naomi in answer to an intercepted request from Kamal for a doctor so that they might investigate. They travel there by boat, almost being attacked by Kamal's crocodiles on the way, and are taken by Haldar and his armed guards to meet with Amita, who accuses them of lying about their identities as a doctor has already arrived.
