Ruby Sunday/Other realities

From Tardis Wiki, the free Doctor Who reference

Alternate counterparts of Ruby Sunday existed in other realities. These individuals shared similarities with Ruby from the Doctor's universe, despite existing in parallel universes or alternate timelines.

Alternate timelines[[edit] | [edit source]]

Cracked timeline[[edit] | [edit source]]

A cracked timeline was created when a group of Goblins travelled back in time. The goblins took Ruby Sunday, who had been left as a baby outside the church on Ruby Road, and ate her aboard their ship. (TV: The Church on Ruby Road [+]Loading...["The Church on Ruby Road (TV story)"])

Rubathon Blue[[edit] | [edit source]]

Rubathon Blue was a counterpart of Ruby from an alternate timeline created when Ruby stepped on a butterfly in prehistoric Wyoming, 150 million years in her relative past. She was not human, having scales and antennae, and identified herself as a member of the 57th Hemisphere Hatchlings. Rubathon was haughty, speaking in a posh accent and believing herself incapable of making mistakes, and she threatened to kill the Doctor when she thought he was accusing her of such. The Doctor negated Rubathon's timeline by reviving the butterfly. (TV: Space Babies [+]Loading...["Space Babies (TV story)"])

Other[[edit] | [edit source]]

Encountering Roger ap Gwilliam[[edit] | [edit source]]

A timeline which was ultimately aborted, and was believed by Kate Stewart to have been in some way abnormal from its inception, began Ruby when, after landing in 2024 Wales, she and the Doctor disrupted a fairy circle. The Doctor stepped on it without seeing it, and he and Ruby then examined the objects laid out in the circle. As Ruby read "Rest in peace, Mad Jack" from a scroll, the Doctor vanished, and Ruby found herself followed by a woman who always remained 73 yards away from her.

Upon realising the Doctor appeared to be gone, Ruby hiked along the coastline in search of help. She encountered a hiker who told her she was near Glyngatwg. Ruby asked her to try and speak to the woman, but the hiker instead ran away screaming. In town, Ruby entered the local pub, Y Pren Marw, encountering several villagers who were unsympathetic to her claims about witchcraft, pranking her by claiming that disrupting the circle had unleashed Mad Jack. Ruby stayed in the area for a short time, waiting for the Doctor to appear, but he did not. She was asked to leave after Joshua Steele, who had also attempted to speak to the woman at Ruby's request and had fled the village, said he would only return if Ruby was gone.

Returning to London, Ruby saw the woman following her, appearing alongside the train. Upon arriving home in Notting Hill, she told her mother, Carla Sunday, about the woman. Carla attempted to talk to her as well, but also ran away screaming, the woman's effect turning her against her daughter and leading her to disown Ruby entirely.

In 2025, over a year later, Ruby was approached by Kate Lethbridge-Stewart of UNIT, who had been monitoring her situation and wanted to help. Kate told Ruby that the timeline appeared to be "suspended around [her] event". However, despite the precautions UNIT had taken against aliens, psychic abilities, and the increasing levels of supernatural occurrences, their attempt to apprehend the woman failed as they too fell under her effect and promptly abandoned Ruby.

Ruby lived her life day-by-day, never able to hold down a relationship or get close to anyone due to the presence of the woman. In 2046, on a date with Sanjay Miah, Ruby saw a political debate on television featuring Roger ap Gwilliam of the Albion Party, during which he mentioned that his nickname as a young man had been "Mad Jack". Ruby recalled that the Doctor had mentioned Gwilliam just before his disappearance, describing him as the most dangerous prime minister in British history who had led the world to the brink of nuclear war.

What she witnessed convinced Ruby that her purpose in life was to stop Gwilliam, and she promptly dumped her date and went to volunteer for Gwilliam's campaign. During the course of her duties, Ruby witnessed Gwilliam express disturbing enthusiasm over the idea of launching nuclear missiles. After he won the election with a majority government, Ruby learned from another aide that Gwilliam had struck a secret deal to purchase nuclear weapons from Pakistan and declare Britain's independence from NATO using the weapons. At a rally in a Cardiff football stadium Ruby chose to act and with the use of her phone manoeuvred herself into being precisely 73 yards away from Gwilliam. This led to him interacting with the woman, which caused him to immediately resign from office. Afterwards, Ruby hoped that this would mark the end of the woman haunting her.

The woman did not, however, vanish, and Ruby lived out her years largely alone. In 2086, she returned to where the TARDIS had been left in Wales, finding it had become a monument where people left flowers and messages in memory of the departed, sadly noting that she never found her birth mother, but admitted to the TARDIS that in spite of everything, she still had hope, noting that's what the Doctor would have wanted. Sixty-five years after the fairy circle incident, Ruby, on her deathbed, consoled herself that despite the abandonment she had never truly been alone, at which point the woman unexpectedly advanced upon her. At the moment of her death, Ruby was sent backwards in time to 2024, where she manifested as the woman. Seen by her younger self, Ruby was able to prevent the breaking of the fairy circle, undoing the timeline. (TV: 73 Yards [+]Loading...["73 Yards (TV story)"])
