Geography[[edit] | [edit source]]

Location of Sumatra. (TV: Survivors of the Flux)

Sumatra was a large Indonesian island (PROSE: Doctor Who: The Encyclopedia [+]Loading...["Doctor Who: The Encyclopedia (reference book)"]) located to the south of Siam, in the waters off the Asian mainland. To the north-west of Sumatra was the Bay of Bengal and to the north, though guarded by a headland, was the Gulf of Siam. The island of Java was located just off the south-east of Sumatra, while the island of Borneo was located roughly to the east. (TV: Survivors of the Flux) It was located near the equator. (AUDIO: The Great Space Elevator)

History[[edit] | [edit source]]

The island was part of Kublai Khan's empire. In 1289, the Khan tried offering the island to the First Doctor, should he win their game of backgammon, but the Doctor refused, insistent that his prize for winning should be his TARDIS. (TV: "Assassin at Peking")

Sometime in the 15th century, the Flor de la Mar sank off the coast of Sumatra. Years later, the treasure it was carrying, including the Keystone, was found by Captain Sin Ji-Hun. (TV: Legend of the Sea Devils)

On the same day as the volcanic eruption of Krakatoa in 1883, a sketch of the Ninth Doctor washed up on a beach on Sumatra. It eventually found its way into Clive Finch's collection of artefacts related to the Doctor. (TV: Rose) However, Clive also dated the sketch to 1880, while the sketch itself had the date 1888 on it. (PROSE: Have You Seen This Man?)

In the 1890s, the Fata Morgana turned up on Île de Sainte-Barbe off the southern coast of Sumatra. (AUDIO: Island of Death)

Sumatra appeared on a map of the region in 1904. (TV: Survivors of the Flux)

The Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon and Victoria Waterfield arrived in Sumatra and found themselves visiting the Great Space Elevator located on the island. (AUDIO: The Great Space Elevator)

People[[edit] | [edit source]]

In the late 19th century, Silas Beckett told Vastra and Jenny Flint that he was saved from an attack in Millwall by a Sumatran man. Jenny doubted this. (AUDIO: The Cars That Ate London!)
