Hindustan, (TV: War of the Sontarans) or Hindoostan, was a coastal (TV: Survivors of the Flux) region in south Asia. (TV: War of the Sontarans)

Geography[[edit] | [edit source]]

Hindustan shared its north-western border with Persia. (TV: War of the Sontarans) Its eastern coastline looked out over the Bay of Bengal, while its western coastline looked out over the Arabian Sea. Approximate to the region, across a small stretch of sea to the south, was the island of Ceylon. (TV: Survivors of the Flux)

Location of Hindustan. (TV: Survivors of the Flux)

Madras was located on the south-east coast of Hindoostan, while Bombay was located on the west coast. The tip of the southern coast was known as Cape Comorin. (TV: Survivors of the Flux) Calcutta was located in the east of the region.[1] The River Ganges flowed through the north of Hindoostan. (TV: Survivors of the Flux)

History[[edit] | [edit source]]

In 1855, Hindustan was shown on a British map. (TV: War of the Sontarans)

Hindoostan appeared on a map of the region in 1904. (TV: Survivors of the Flux)

Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]

In the real world, there is some debate as to the true boundaries of the region once known as Hindustan. Perhaps the most widely accepted are those presented in the text Hudud al-Alam. This defined the boundaries as roughly those of the Indian subcontinent, with its western limit formed by the river Indus, southern limit going up to the Great Sea and the eastern limit at Kamarupa, the present day Assam.

Footnotes[[edit] | [edit source]]

  1. By merging the maps shown in both War of the Sontarans and Survivors of the Flux, Calcutta is placed within the north-eastern border of Hundustan.
