Biography[[edit] | [edit source]]

George, also known as Georgie in his youth, (AUDIO: The Empty Man [+]Loading...["The Empty Man (audio story)"]) was born to Henry and Maddie Mortimer and had a sister, Mary, with whom he played duets on the violin as a child. Maddie spent the last moments of her life with the two children in their nursery after travelling back from 2014 to 1936 with River Song. At the age of nine, George wrote a letter to Eldridge Brinkwood in which he praised his writing, expressed a desire to become a writer and asked whether Brinkwood had seen a ghost as he believed he had. (AUDIO: The Empty Man [+]Loading...["The Empty Man (audio story)"]) George went on to become a writer himself and spent most of his time in Switzerland, where he entered into a relationship with Remy. He kept his homosexuality secret.

George returned to Hideaway for a time and liked River, who became Thomas's governess and whom she drew a picture of. She convinced him to say a proper goodbye to his family before he returned to Switzerland, knowing that he would soon die in a skiing accident, and he found the courage to tell Mary about Remy. Before his death, he wrote The Midnight Waves, which included a short story about River. (AUDIO: Friend of the Family [+]Loading...["Friend of the Family (audio story)"])

Legacy[[edit] | [edit source]]

Eldridge Brinkwood always carried around the letter that George sent him. (AUDIO: The Empty Man [+]Loading...["The Empty Man (audio story)"])

The Midnight Waves was published posthumously in 1964 and Mary and Remy were still in contact with one another in 1988. It was thanks to George's diaries that Harry Mortimer and Vinay Siddiqui could follow River's time in the 1960s after she left them to become Thomas's governess.
